The most insane battle at Final Fight went down in the 3rd place round as Darren McNamara and Chris Forsberg did battle one last time. On the first run Darren McNamara got over aggressive and ran into the back of Forsberg offering him an advantage. On the follow run Forsberg took it hard into the wall but at the same time (off camera almost) you can see Darren McNamara crash into the wall as well so hard he lost the back bash bar to the car. This tandem battle was the focus of a poll earlier this month and one of the more talked about runs of the Long Beach weekend. We found this video from a camera mounted on Forsberg's little glass window in the back (we think) from the tandem runs. After the 1:00 of runs the camera keeps running as Matt Powers pops his head into the 370z for a conversation. Matt Powers come up right away and apologizes for hitting him. Clearly the test went well with the Falken Tire cars since Justin Pawlak dominated Streets of Long Beach up and down. The test in North Carolina was documented by Falken Tire showing off the ASD drivers prepping the new chassis this year and doing some shakedowns in the car. I know, that may seem like a bit of an overstatement but really; it’s actually a pretty significant milestone in both mine and my brother’s career in the world of professional drifting. Both of us have been working over the past couple of years trying to make a reputation for ourselves in Canada, and Irwindale was a really nice reminder of the way things are paying off now, and how they may potentially pay off in the future. Being able to go across America and have people recognize Pat’s hachiroku really is the big payoff to me right now. It just feels like real physical solid proof of videos on the internet doing their job, and it feels damn good. Anyway, I think my other reward was getting to see my first round of Formula Drift at Irwindale. I don’t think there could've been a better place to see some of the best drifters in the world slinging their big budget cars around like toys. I'm sure everybody knows this by now, but something that struck me was how approachable a lot of the Formula D drivers actually are. Check out the Dodge Motorsports team talking it up about the Formula Drift Irwindale weekend. Neither driver was even able to run in the Top 32 due to a lack of qualifying score for ACP and a fire in Sam Hubinette's Dodge Challenger. The fire was from a fuel line issue which the team called a very rare occurrence with the product. Here is a documentation from Justin Shreeve on his trip to Formula Drift Las Vegas. My recent trip to Las Vegas for round 5 of Formula Drift was one of minimal luxuries. Joe Ayala and I could only afford one night in a hotel and a rental car was out of the question. Day one, we got up around noon, grabbed some "breakfast" at the Blueberry Hill next to the hotel, and began our journey to the track at around two. The trek consisted of roughly 2-3 miles, on foot, in 108 degree weather. Luckily for us, we found a shopping cart to carry our backpacks, camera cases, laptop bags, and of course my skateboard. Before long, we had covered the cart in MotorMavens cards (gotta represent) and found fun stuff to do on the way, such as drifting and dirt dropping the cart on the side of Las Vegas Blvd. Joe and I had fun overall, but boy were we glad when an old woman (with a legit mustache) stopped and asked us if we needed a ride. She drove us about a quarter of a mile to the gift shop of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, complaining the whole time about how she would be late to work. Haha!

John Russakoff at Gymkhana Grid Test Event
Join us as we roll with professional drifter John Russakoff on his first outing at Ken Block's Gymkhana Grid Test/Media event held on 08/07/10 at Hollywood Park Raceway. As a special invited driver John was able to drive the course and adapt to gymkhana driving fairly quickly in his rear wheel drive AE86 Corolla. John had a chance to test his grip/slip skills at this event and in doing so was one of the fastest/quickest cars of the day! Unlike drifting, his main priority at this event is to run the course as quickly as possible, using alot of grip and minor drifting.

Here is a preview of the movie (Joon Maeng's Life) that Jay and Mira at 29Frame is working on. It will be produced and shown in theatres in South Korea sometime next year. This portion of the movie is my first experience out at the GymkhanaGrid.com Media Day event held on August 7th 2010.

We will soon be running a fully built engine by Speed O Motive that will be assembled by LS Automotive and a GT35r Garrett turbo provided by Bergenholtz Racing on the LS Auto Nitto Tires S13.5. Falken Takes 1st and 2nd at 2010 FD Wall Speedway
Team Falken’s Daijiro Yoshihara scored his second victory in a row at Round 3 of the Formula Drift Championship in New Jersey. Dubbed "The Gauntlet", Wall Speedway is known for its unforgiving course layout and harsh banked turn to in-field transition. For Falken, although a repeat of 2009’s Wall podium sweep was just narrowly missed, a Déjà Vu top 2 finish from this year’s Round 2 at Road Atlanta set Yoshihara and Vaughn Gittin Jr. once again on top of the podium with very close one, two finish. Vaughn in the ASD built Monster Energy / Falken Tire 2011 Ford Mustang continues to lead the series followed by Dai in his Discount Tire / Falken Tire Nissan Silvia S13 built by SPD Metalworks.

Ryan Tuerck Vs. Vaughn Gittin Jr. - One Camera Doesn't Make It
The first sequence you will see we have a camera facing backwards on Vaughn Gittin Jr.'s car and across the wing of Ryan Tuerck's Pontiac Solstice. On the second tandem run we focus Ryan Tuerck since Vaughn Gittin Jr. is the follow car. Going into that second outside clipping point Ryan Tuerck puts it in the wall hard forcing him to straighten out and lose the tandem battle. He hit the wing so hard that our camera was on it violently shook the camera off it's mounted position but stayed on the wing. The GoPro HD camera survived and we brought the footage to you at Wrecked Magazine. Amid tough competition all day long, two Falken drivers advanced to the Top 8 Round, as both McQuarrie and Gittin defeated their opponents to move to the Top 4. Unfortunately, Gittin was involved in a collision during this run and was unable to advance, while teammate McQuarrie lost to eventual winner Forsberg. In the battle for third overall, it was Team Falken v. Team Falken, as McQuarrie came out on top over Gittin, who was able to compete despite his accident in the previous round. The event’s trademark nickname, “Breaking Point,” lived up to its reputation as a number of entrants became casualties to the track’s banking and tight transitions throughout the course. Check out Vaughn Gittin Jr.'s hard hit into the turn one k-rail when he loses his ability to steer while entering turn one. Vaughn flys into the k-rail so hard he loses his driver's side wheel/suspension assembly. Vaughn hopped out of the car right away and was fine after the accident. Team Falken Tire Sweeps New Jersey
Performance and preparation paid off as Team Falken Tires factory drivers swept the podium at Wall Speedway in Saturday nights round 3 of the 2009 Formula Drift season. Darren McNamara took the top rung in his Saturn Sky; Vaughn Gittin, Jr., earned second with his 2010 Ford Mustang GT; and Tyler McQuarrie finished third, driving his Nissan 350Z.

 The achievement was historical as this was the first time ever for three Team Falken cars to take the top three positions as well as the first time one team has dominated the podium.

 Wall Speedway, aptly named The Gauntlet, is a 16-degree banked oval along the straightaway with 30 degrees on the turns before moving to the figure 8 infield portion of the course. The capacity crowd witnessed strong competition among Team Falken and other Formula D competitors as skies and rain cleared allowing for ideal door-to-door high speed battles. Five drivers using Falken Azenis RT615 tires advanced to the top 16. In the finals, Gittin, Jr., stood up against McNamara with McNamara ultimately taking the win in a close fought match.

When the Hankook Rig arrived at Formula Drift Atlanta two weeks ago they found Ryuji Miki's Mazda Rx-7 had shifted off it's supports and one wheel was hanging down into the lower cabin of the rig. So we still haven't seen this car in action yet and it's almost round three of the 2009 Formula D series but it looks like they are already making progress on it. The Scion Racing tC is looking better than I've ever seen a drifting Scion look at Long Beach. Some bright accents with flat colors has never looked so good on a race car. Clearly during the off season they were taking cues from Rogue Status to get a car looking that good. Formula D Long Beach Media Day provided us a chance to document and check out quite a few of the new 2009 rides. Rhys Millen had his new Hyundai Genesis out in full force but had some mishaps with turn 9. On his first run of the day he swung the car backwards and tapped the tire barrier at the end of turn 9 lightly. Then after looking really good for the rest of the afternoon his last run of the day he swung around again and hit the barrier doing some more damage to the rear end of the car.
