kevinlawrence-pro2-champion

Kevin Lawrence is the 2017 Formula Drift Pro 2 champion, taking the championship by just 2 points. Lawrence won the final event in Texas, bookending the season in which he started out on the highest high by winning his hometown event in Orlando but also hitting a season low in Atlanta by not qualifying for the main show. Travis Reeder finished in second after leading the points following rounds 2 and 3 in Atlanta and Seattle respectively. Reeder qualified 9th, but lost his first round tandem battle with Austin Meeks at the Texas season finale.

Following the final standings, the top 8 drivers have earned their Formula Drift Pro 1 licenses for the 2018 season:

10 Things I Learned About Formula Drift Orlando

jcastro
10. JJJJJJ CASTRO!
The legend of Jhonnattan Castro in Florida continues on. He has a long history of being success at Florida tracks including defeating Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the past. J Castro single handedly derailed the James Deane hype train by defeating him in the Top 16. Now

9. Kevin Lawrence Might Be the Future Fredric Aasbo
Looking into Pro 2 you basically had Kevin Lawrence put on a clinic against the rest of the series. I know that this was his home track but man he had that robotic style of consistency that I remember Aasbo having back in the Supra. Smart money has him winning the Pro 2 championship this year.
8. Pro 2 Picture Perfect
Finally the Pro 2 program is moving in the right direction. Good battles, balanced tandem, and even a great podium restored my belief in the system once again. Sadly the field was filled with many drivers who are not Pro Am license holders but I’ll take it for now. Pro 2 put on a decent performance in Orlando last season as well so the success of this year’s Pro 2 program will be looked at next round.

7. WHY did you spin Dean Kearney?
An amazing battle in my eyes was the European showdown of Dean Kearney and Piotr Wiecek. Why did you spin Dean Kearney? Just why! He has developed over time in the Dodge Viper and these guys were ready to put on a show! I don’t think Dean Kearney has that Viper in championship trim yet but he is doing far better than I ever thought he could over the last few events with it.

2016 Formula Drift Pro 2 – Orlando Round 2 Qualifying [RESULTS]

Landreville-ATL-Qualify

Marc Landreville backed up his top qualifying effort in Atlanta with a second top qualifying effort in Orlando. Landreville is classified as a Pro driver, but appears to only be driving in Pro 2 for the season. The Orlando layout seems much more friendly to the Pro 2 class, so tandem battles tomorrow should be fairly competitive. Top 16 tandem battles start at 6:45p EST tomorrow.

Here’s how qualifying shook out in Orlando:

1 – Marc Landreville – 91
2 – Kevin Lawrence – 85
3 – Austin Meeks– 84
4 – Nate Hamilton – 83
5 – Taylor Hull – 83
6 – Ryan Litteral – 82
7 – Jeff Jones – 79
8 – Dirk Stratton – 78
9 – Trent Beechum – 78
10 – Josh McGuire – 77

12 – Andrew Lewis – 74
13 –  Dan Burkett – 74
14 – Donovan Brockoway – 73
15 –  Luis Lizardi – 71
16 – Sheng Ng Nian– 71

Tandem Ladder:

Landreville vs Nian

Kevin Lawrence – Formula Drift Pro 2 [INTERVIEW]

KevinLawrence

Wrecked Magazine: Who are you and how did you get your Pro 2 license ?
Kevin Lawrence: I am from Clermont, FL. I earned my pro2 license through the Three Palms drift series that ended up being a pretty big flop of a series.

Wrecked Magazine: Can you give us a break down of your car and what sponsors you have on board?
Kevin Lawrence:This year I will be running a RHD S14 Chassis powered by an RB25 engine that we are pushing 770whp out of this year! Enjuku Racing is my title sponsor this year and with out them specifically I wouldn’t have a drifting career at all.
A big sponsor I partnered up with is Fortune Auto who has been giving us ( team Enjuku) outstanding support with helping us get the cars dialed in perfect on their coilovers so we are 100% ready for all our events. A few other sponsors I also am excited to have on board this year include. Konig Wheels, Lucas Oils, Design Engineering Inc. “DEI”, 2f Performance, Wilwood Brakes, and Chase

I am also very thankful to have a bunch of my last years sponsors still on board with me who see great potential in my driving and program so a big thank you goes out to. Vibrant Performance, Falken Tire, Competition Clutch, Turbo By Garrett, BridgeMoto, R.S. Enthalpy,Bink Industries, ISR Performance, The Drivesaft Shop, DOC Race, and Thunderbolt Race Fuels

Wrecked Magazine: What track are you most excited about and most nervous to tackle this season?
Kevin Lawrence: Definitely Atlanta! I have been so eager to get a chance to drive that track since the first time I visited it back in 2006. The elevation changes the track has kinda makes me a bit nervous being from Florida and not having much experience driving any tracks with changes in elevation but I think I’am ready to tackle it!

JoshMcGuire-LonestarDriftRd1

Wrecked Magazine: Can you name one drifter you really want to see in a battle in Pro 2 this year?
Kevin Lawrence:This year I specifically want to see battle with Josh McGuire in Texas again after our double OMT battles last year that he advanced from. So I really want redemption for that. haha

Wrecked Magazine: Who is your favorite drifter in the world and who to you derive driving inspiration from?
Kevin Lawrence: It’s honestly hard for me to pick a single favorite, I look up to quite a few drivers and have always been a huge fan of the underdog so to speak since they are the drivers who in my opinion are truly driving their hardest to compete and the ones who want the win more than anyone else. Aasbo, Denofa and Bakchis are the ones I have been watching mostly the last few years and it was great seeing Aasbo take the championship last year, Denofa Take first and Irwindale and I have a feeling Odi this year is going to get quite a few podiums.

ChelseaDeNofa

Wrecked Magazine: Who do you think will win the Formula Drift Pro Championship this season?
Kevin Lawrence: Denofa is who I would be betting on this year, after his win in Long Beach I believe that was the biggest mental boost anyone could get for someone who has been struggling in past seasons and truly wants the championship. Knowing Chelsea’s past in driving he will continue to show up at all the rounds this year swinging!

Wrecked Magazine: What is one hurdle or headache you ran into during the off-season gearing up for Pro 2?
Kevin Lawrence: Haha! This is an easy one. I am at just under 2 weeks before the first Pro2 event this year my engine threw a connecting rod out both sides of the block which i am currently working on to get our spare in now.

Wrecked Magazine: What advice can you give to the upcoming Pro 2 drivers who are currently in Pro Am?
Kevin Lawrence: Work as hard as you can on the relationships with your sponsors you have now so that they are just as eager to work with you as you are with them. Pro2 is a huge step from Pro Am and you will absolutely need all of their help in many different ways along your first year in Pro 2.

2015 Formula Drift Pro 2 at Irwindale Speedway [RESULTS]

JuhaRintanen

Juha Rintanen completed the event sweep with a top qualifying spot and a first place finish for the weekend. This Pro 2 round at Irwindale Speedway was far better than last year with several drivers really taking on the bank. Faruk Kugay ended his run with a krail smash and insane spin drift while in throttle the whole time. Alex Heilbrunn had clutch issues during qualifying and struggled through competition as well even though he secured a championship already. Here is how they finished:

1st- Juha Rintanen
2nd- Cameron Moore
3rd- Kevin Lawrence

Three Palms Raceway Owes Rent, Payouts, Taxes, and More

ThreePalmsDriftSeries

The group who purchased a Pro Am license from Formula Drift in Florida is known as Three Palms Drift Pro Am that also rents and runs Three Palms Speedway seem to be underwater in debts. The track from what I understand was called Punta Gorda Speedway and was shut down by the property owners (Charlotte County Airport Authority) when the old owners weren’t paying bills, having issues, etc… Three Palms came in for a 36 month / $6,500 a month rental agreement for the property according to NBC Channel 2 and brought the track back to life.

KelseyRowlings.ThreePalms

The track then hosted a winter Pro Am series bringing down guest judges such as Geoff Stoneback and pro judge Brian Eggert to help legitimize the Pro Am and issue some Pro 2 licenses for 2015. Well, when the smoke cleared from the Pro Am series they owed people money (some who wished to go on the record and some who asked to be kept out of it.) The $15,000 in series prize money announced in December here from what I understand has not been paid out to the tune of one cent at this point. If you add on the tax troubles and not paying their landlord I don’t see anyone getting paid anytime soon from this Pro Am.

KevinLawernce

Some of the short lived series content can be found here in our archives. These content posts from Wrecked might sadly be the only records left of this Florida Pro Am series soon. However, some good did come out of the series as it helped a couple Florida drifters run Pro 2 this season including Kesley Rowlings who I think has a possible bright future in Formula Drift.

Formula Drift Pro 2 Driver Preview – Kevin Lawrence

KevinLawernce

Enjuku Racing employee now turning Pro2 driver for 2015, Kevin Lawrence looks to use his speed shop knowledge to make sure his Right-Hand Drive S13.4 will run hard and consistent. He earned his license from the new Three Palms Drift Pro Am series, where drivers who placed in the Top 3 of the series also gained cash sponsorships from Three Palms. Looks like he’s already put that money to good use on his S13 by building up a rather impressive looking RB25. Hopefully he’ll have better luck with the legendary Nissan engine than Dan Brockett had last year. Part of that longevity will come from using a Nissan 350Z CD009 six-speed transmission rather than the KA24 or SR20 FS5W71C five-speed. If you’ve never looked at a CD009, it’s massive for the S13 chassis but will take the abuse better than the FS5 transmission. He’s also going for massive lock with a Wisefab kit on the front end while ISIS Performance arms are used on the rear with BC Racing ER-Type coilovers controlling everything.
