FIA Drifting Working Group Meeting

img_5442

The latest meeting of the FIA Drifting Working Group was held in Paris on February 6th, 2017. I was invited to present the results of the Judges Working Group meeting that I spoke about HERE, and to get a consensus from the group on how to proceed with some key issues that were raised during that meeting. As for the Drifting Working Group meeting, I wouldn’t go so far as to say the specifics of the meeting are confidential, but I don’t want to delve too deeply at the moment. In general terms, a few subjects including standardizing technical regulations, safety regulations and of course the results of the aforementioned Judging  Working Group meeting from this past December were discussed.

Drifting And The FIA

fb54bd976b50deb9b497bc62fc3068f4As I’m sure most readers are aware, the FIA has taken a keen interest in drifting as of late. This was first brought to my attention last year at Round 1 in Long Beach when Jim Liaw introduced me to a man from the FIA by the name of Morgan Caron. I was told he was there to “check it out” and see how we did things at Formula Drift, but not much else. After that we heard of meetings at the FIA offices in Paris between some of the organizers of the biggest and most important drift championships in the world. They were there to give their opinions and ideas of the direction of the sport globally, and help the FIA understand what the sport is all about. Read More…

Drift All-Stars Sets Eye on International Round in Thailand

DriftAllStarsThailand

Drift All-Stars is looking beyond Europe in 2016 announcing that the first round of the championship will be taking place in Thailand! I find this a solid move to bring in an international stop as part of the regular series instead of an added on bonus like other organizations. This international stop brings them tothe world-class Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand. The southeast Asia market has always seemed to do so well with drift events coming into town. They don’t have a date set for Thailand or the 2016 season but they promise a full schedule will be delivered shortly.

2015 British Drift Championship Round 5 at Anglesey Circuit [RESULTS]

BritishDriftChampionship

The show down for the championship was a tad lack luster in the end with the championship chase drivers going out early. Jack Shanahan ended up being the 2015 champion even with major car troubles plaguing him throughout Round 5 at Anglesey Circuit. Once Mike Marshall failed to qualify it gave Jack an easy lock into the championship.

Here is how Round 5 finished-
1st. Martin Richards Drift Elite & Evergreen Tyres Drift Team
2nd. Simon Perry Lassa Tyres Drift Team
3rd. Brian Egan Dealtwidth

Daigo Saito’s Lamborghini Murcielago Nears D1 Grand Prix Debut

DaigoSaito.D1GP DaigoSaito.Lambo.D1GrandPrix DaigoSaito.Interior

I cannot help but get more excited as I see the progress of the drift Murcielago come together in Daigo Saito’s shop. Here is the January update when we found out this Lambo was coming to life as a drift car, a Lambo dismantling update in March, and finally a June moving forward build. His Lamborghini progress is still being called out as BS by skeptics but this build looks more real by the day as far as we can tell. A rumor that it might hit the track before the end of this D1GP season is out in the rumormill. Can he bring this to Formula Drift for 2016? Door banging with this thing in the United States would be ideal. What do you think of the build progress?

Hat tip to Dennis Ho for submitting the new pics!

2015 Formula Drift Japan at Fuji Speedway [RESULTS]

FormulaDriftJapan

This was probably the most disappointing start to the Formula Drift “World Championship” anyone could of anticipated. The driving was subpar to most Pro Am series now in America. The final battle didn’t even happen with Odi Bakchis suffering from a technical failure. My one highlight of the weekend was the Suenaga vs. Kawabata battle which I clipped to our Instagram page. Here are the podium results-

1 – Masato Kawabata
2 – Odi Bakchis
3 – Tadahiro Fukada

Team Raidopower Debuts 700hp Mercedes Powered S14

Team Raidopower Motorsport

In the middle of the 2JZ era the guys at Team Raidopower from Sweden have built a 700hp Mercedes powered S14. The car features a Rocket Bunny kit and will be driven by Tokan Bielkelof in the Drift All-Stars series for the 2015 season. I couldn’t find exact details easily on the Mercedes power plant but it appears to be a 3.2L turbocharged setup. We except to see many more Drift All-Stars cars debut over the next couple weeks.
