2014 Redbull Drift Shifters Is Car Pinball [RECAP]

MadMike

The event fired up at local time 4:30pm here in California and seemingly ran smoother than any drift event I have seen. The event packed a star studded cast into the heart of Auckland, New Zealand for a Great 8 that was aired on Redbull TV. The format saw every driver make a pass and the bottom four scores were eliminated from competition. Then out of the Final Four, the top two drivers moved into a final which saw another.

2014 D1NZ Round 1 at Manfeild Raceway [RECAP]

CsGarage.D1NZ

Shortly after wrapping up the 2014 drifting season here in New Zealand we were back at it again for 2015! The Demon Energy D1NZ series stopped by at Manfeild Raceway in the lower North Island for Round 1 of competition. With high speed entries, smooth flowing corners and large runoffs this would be a chance to really test the cars – many of which receiving new setups during the off-season.

FangaDan
One of those would be Fanga Dan Woolhouse in his Century Batteries Holden Commodore. The new VE chassis has been in the works for a while now – built as a serious championship contender to the tune of well over 600hp. However later in the day a broken axle meant the new car would not go on and instead Fanga would borrow Ben Jenkins’ Pro-Am S13, driving well but without the necessary pace for a round win.
C33Laurel.Drifting
Similarly the current D1 champion Gaz Whiter was not driving his usual high power LS7 Silvia. Shipping that car to Australia for World Time Attack meant Whiter would borrow an RB powered C33 Laurel last used in competition back in 2007. Even with Whiter’s experience and driving ability the team knew it would be a challenge come battle time, and unfortunately electrical problems took him out of the game early.

A Look at the Final Round of D1NZ Under the Lights at Mt. Smart [RECAP]

D1NZ.MtSmart

It was finally time for the title fight to kick off at the Cody’s D1NZ National Drifting Championship Round 6 at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland. The competition had been strong throughout the last five rounds of drifting with several drivers in with a chance of taking out the championship along with bragging rights as New Zealand’s next drift king!

RedbullMazdaRX7

The custom built circuit at Mt Smart was another tight and technical track designed to test the driver’s abilities behind the wheel. The return of the concrete walls meant the ever present danger of wrecking the car with one wrong move. Shaped almost like a spiral, the circuit started with a long right hand turn scrubbing the walls, tightening into a roundabout with inside clips and then a very tight left hairpin and back around the first turn. Almost like a mini Road Atlanta section.

D1NZ Round 5 Takes Over Christchurch [EVENT RECAP]

MazdaRX7
Round 5 of the Cody’s D1NZ National Drifting Championship saw the series return to Ruapuna Raceway in Christchurch. Located in the South Island of New Zealand, the round required about a 16 hour drive for most teams or paying for shipping and flights. Ruapuna was a huge success last season so it was no surprise to see this round would host the biggest field of entries all year.

MadMikeRX8

The track is also the longest drift section this year and one of the fastest, meaning it was a tire killer at only 1-2 laps per set. The teams were prepared for this and packed extra tires into every nook and cranny they could find. Alongside his stock of Nitto’s, Mad Mike Whiddett decided to ship down both the RX7 Madbul and RX8 Badbul being spoiled for choice.

2014 D1NZ Round 5 in Christchurch [RESULTS]

D1NZ.Round5

Round 5 of the D1NZ series was interesting as it saw Gary ‘Gaz’ Whiter drive straight to a victory from the top qualification spot. Due to car trouble, Mad Mike Whiddett was eliminated early after having a gearbox issue in his RX-8 and then pulled out his backup RX-7 and suffered a broken axle! This mechanical trouble watched his championship lead evaporate and he now sits in 2nd place. Last round of the 2013/14 season kicks off next month in Auckland! Below are all the results from the big D1NZ weekend:

2014 D1NZ Round 4 Recap at Taupo Motorsport Park

D1NZ.TandemDrifting

With the halfway point behind us the competition was really starting to heat up for round four of the Cody’s D1NZ National Drifting Championship. After two rounds of drifting on smaller custom built tracks, the drivers welcomed the return of Taupo Motorsport Park. Not only did it mean getting away from the dangerous concrete walls, but the fast and flowing layout would allow the drivers to really push their cars to the limit.

GazWhiter.D1NZ.Tandem

For Gaz Whiter and his team however it was a disastrous start before the competition had even begun. During the Friday test session Whiter’s LS7 suffered engine failure caused by loss of oil pressure. Shortly afterward the team went about the huge process of stripping the engine, inspecting, cleaning and rebuilding it from the ground up.

You have to admire their dedication because at this point most teams would probably pack up and go home. At 4pm the next day however, to everyone’s amazement, that familiar V8 rumble was heard once again in pit-lane and Whiter went about his business as usual – qualifying in P6.

MadMike.D1NZ

Current leader in championship points Mad Mike Whiddett was aiming to extend his sizable lead this round in the quad-rotor ‘Madbul’ RX7. Mike knows the track well and went on to lay down two 85 point runs in qualifying claiming 8th spot.

More drama occurred in the battles when Matt Lauder, a newcomer to Pro this season, defeated current champion Fanga Dan Woolhouse. After a first run that was too close to call the battle would go one more time where Lauder would capitalize on a slow exit from Fanga on the final corner.

D1NZ.MadMikeWhiddett

The best battle of the round would definitely go to that of Nico Reid vs Mad Mike Whiddett. With Reid’s RB powered Silvia having the speed and angle down to a fine art, and Mike’s superb chase runs it was another battle that went one more time. Again it was too close to pick a definitive winner so the pair would go once more. On the last corner Nico Reid got a little too close to Whiddett, making contact and spinning Mike handing him the win.
CurtWhittaker.D1NZ

Fast forward to the final battle now with Curt Whittaker in the Autosure 2JZ R34 who had taken out Mad Mike, coming up against Gaz Whiter who was simply destroying his competition despite having almost no practice time. Whittaker was first to lead, picking up an early advantage when Whiter made a small mistake.
D1NZ.GazWhiter

After swapping over Whiter went all out, piloting the Tectaloy S14 to a near perfect line. At the end of the section he was able to create enough of a gap in proximity on Whittaker and walk away with the round win!
D1NZ.Podium

Gaz Whiter and the team will be absolutely stoked with the round win, especially after a spell of bad luck in the previous rounds of competition. The win puts Whiter in second place overall in championship points, followed closely by Whittaker in third place overall. Mad Mike Whiddett remains in first place overall retaining a substantial lead in the competition. Next round the series travels to New Zealand’s south island based track Ruapuna Raceway. With the local drivers having far more experience at this track than the majority of the field, round five will be exciting to watch!

Gaz Whiter Crashes at D1NZ Round 3 Baypark [VIDEO]

Going a little crazy on entry Gaz Whiter hit the wall with his S14 and then barreled quickly into another set of k-rails pushing one a good 6 inches backwards towards a crowd of rowdy fans who scattered on impact behind the catch fence. Gaz hopped out of the car in the video showing everyone he was alright but that 240sx took quite a lick.
