While the North American drift season is just getting started, the Middle East has been in full swing to avoid events in the hot summer months. For Round 3 of the Middle East Drift Championship, a custom track was built at Al Wasl Sports Club which showcased the Dubai skyline as a backdrop for the event. 25 drivers showed up from all over Europe, with the top five drivers being very close in qualifying scores. Championship leader Khalifa bin Sultan Al Nahyan took the top qualifying spot, with Dany Neville taking P2 and UAE driver Mohammed Al Mansoori earning P3.
In what was the battle of the night, Dmitriy Illyuk pushed Khalifa bin Sultan Al Nahyan to a pair of “One More Time” battles in the Top 8 before Illyuk emerged victorious, a win that shook up the championship points battle drastically. Mohammad Al Khaiat, who also was near the top of the table in the championship standings prior to this event, would also bow out in the top 8. In the end, Illyuk took home the victory after surviving a total of 4 “One More Time” battles in the tandem brackets, catapulting him into championship contention.
Middle East Drift Championships will be on summer break until November. Until then, the top 4 drivers sit just 15 points away from each other in the championship table.
