Formula Drift World Championship contenders will grow – FD Canada Drivers List

FredricAasbo

Prior to this weekend’s Formula Drift Canada round, only nine drivers had qualified for the World Championship by driving in the Formula Drift Japan round. In order to be in contention for the World Championship title, drivers must drive in one of the three international rounds (Japan, Canada, and the yet TBD China round). However, the China round is invite-only, so drivers really only had two options. After the Texas round, here’s the current standings in the World Championship among the 9 drivers who are in contention:

Fredric Aasbo – 480 Points
Odi Bakchis – 396 Points
Masashi Yokoi – 309 Points
Matt Field – 263Points
Daigo Saito – 257 Points
Dean Kearney – 205 Points
Charles Ng – 175 Points
Robbie Nishida – 144 Points
“Mad” Mike Whiddett – 141 Points

The drivers list for this weekend’s round contains an additional four names that will be added to this list.

BC Racing Takes on Formula Drift Seattle [VIDEO]

The BC Racing team is shown in full force at Formula Drift Seattle. The long bank and surface transitions make this a key track for proper suspension products and setup. Dean Kearney and Vaughn Gittin Jr. to demo at Formula Drift Canada Round 3 this weekend

Kearney-WallNJ

Formula Drift Canada announced today via Facebook (in French, but luckily we were able to translate via BING) that Dean Kearney and Vaughn Gittin Jr. will be present to do some drifting demos at the event which also features round 7 of the World Rallycross Championships (known as RX in Europe), featuring some of the top drivers from all over Europe. The weekend will also feature the third round of the Formula Drift Canada series, with the points leaders after this round being invited to the finals in September that are part of the Formula Drift World Championship in September.

VaughnGittinJr

All of this is part of the Grand Prix de Trois Rivieres motorsports festival, which features World Rallycross and NASCAR Canada as the headline series. This was the same motorsports festival that got Gittin Jr. behind the wheel of a Canadian NASCAR car last year.

2015 Irish Drift Championship Round 3 – Mondello [RESULTS]

IDC-Round3-GlobalWarfare

How strong are the Irish drivers? Not only was their 11-year unbeaten streak on home soil continued, but the top two drivers aren’t even old enough to earn their drivers license here in the US! 15-year-old Tomas Kiely defeated 15-year-old Jack Shanahan in the all-Irish final, with fellow countryman Dean Kearney taking third place over his Achilles Tire teammate Daigo Saito. For those wondering, Ryan Tuerck was taken out in top 32, and Robbie Nishida was unable to qualify after his initial car was totaled in practice and he jumped into a borrowed ProAm car just moments before qualifying started.

Results:
1st – Tomas Kiely
2nd – Jack Shanahan
3rd – Dean Kearney
4th – Daigo Saito

10 Things I Learned from Formula Drift Round 4 New Jersey

DeanKearney

10. Dean Kearney – Irish Future with an American V10
In my opinion, if you could throw Dean Kearney in one of these Top 10 Formula Drift builds he could make a run at the championship. He has a car I would argue probably struggles to fall in the Top 20 Formula Drift builds. Now that Darren McNamara has exited stage right it feels Dean Kearney has taken the torch as the top Irish drifter in America. He fell just short of a victory which I feel the weather played a big impact. Since the runs went out of order, he did his Top 4 run in the dry where Aasbo got to run his Top 4 battle in the rain in addition to the Finals. Looking forward, Dean Kearney is in 11th place but is headed to Seattle where he got his first podium in the past.

9. Vaughn Gittin Jr. Needs to Give Up on Season and Debut 2015 Mustang RTR
Vaughn Gittin Jr. hasn’t had a stellar season by his standards at all. While he is only 117 points behind Ryan Tuerck in the lead, I find that with three rounds left he isn’t going to make up the gap at 39 points an event on Tuerck or Bakchis. With that said, I would rather him just retire the old S197 Mustang chassis and debut his S550 (2015 Mustang RTR). I got to see the car drift in person at Street Driven Tour VIR and the car looks and sounds way better than his old chassis. Let’s get the new 2015 on the track competing in Formula Drift!

JoonMaeng
8. Joon Maeng is the Only Driver to Not Qualify Under New Structure
Joon Maeng had an up and down 2014 season but nothing has prepared him for the disaster that is 2015 with his BMW Z4. With a 39 driver grid this season he is the only driver left to not qualify for an event yet. One good event could bring him safely into the Top 32 since he is only 51 points behind 32nd place as we stand so he still has some hope. He needs to invest in some serious testing time before these next rounds and start getting some points on the board. I would suggest diving in Pro 2 for the next three rounds to try and either defend his Pro position or at least snag some extra practice laps.

2015 Formula Drift Round 4 in New Jersey [RESULTS]

FredricAasbo

Wow, so Fredric Aasbo survived weather on all fronts to capitalize on another weekend and win the New Jersey Wall Speedway round of Formula Drift back to back. This gives Aasbo two wins on the season and slots him back into a championship chase in a big way. Forsberg spun twice in two runs which I don’t think I have seen in 11 years of watching Formula Drift. The rain came at the end and the European based drivers thrived with Ryan Tuerck sneaking onto the podium for a second time in a row finishing 3rd. Here is how they finished, Top 10 things coming on Monday-

1. Fredric Aasbo
2. Dean Kearney
3. Ryan Tuerck
4. Masashi Yokoi

Dean Kearney Takes on Road Atlanta [VIDEO]

The Thirsty Film team captured a highlight reel of Dean Kearney performing in his Oracle Lighting Dodge Viper. The Achilles team has been adapting and building this Dodge Viper chassis over the past couple seasons has been huge! Dean Kearney carries some great sponsors such as SPEC Clutch to help with the difficulty of developing this chassis.

2015 Formula Drift Livery Overload [GUIDE]

Below is a breakdown of all the 2015 Formula Drift liveries released to date and I will update as we go along. To make life easy, I ranked them by championship finishing order of 2014.

ChrisForsberg.370z

1. Chris Forsberg – Nissan 370z
The championship returns with a Nissan 370z and some added sponsors for the new year. NOS Energy Drink returns as his title and the car gets a refresh to the new Nismo style front end.

FredricAasbo

2. Fredric Aasbo – Scion tC
Another car making its return in 2015. Fredric happens to be my personal prediction for 2015 Formula Drift champion if that means anything to you. He added a title sponsorship with Rockstar Energy Drink and I really hope he runs those yellow wheels he used in his car unveiling. Regardless, the car has never looked better and I think he is poised for a great season.

VaughnGittinJr

3. Vaughn Gittin Jr. – Ford Mustang
Vaughn Gittin Jr. is using his old Ford Mustang with the new livery as they continue to research and develop his 2015 RTR for competition. My guess is, he will stick with the 2014 Mustang until he winds up mathematically out of the championship. That is when he would bring the 2015 RTR out for this year. If he is in the running for the championship, I expect to see this car in 2016. Good news is, you can always see his new 2015 Mustang RTR at non Formula Drift events such as Street Driven May 2nd at VIR.

OdiBakchis
4. Odi Bakchis – Hyundai Genesis / Nissan 240sx
Odi Bakchis is running a complex Formula Drift World Championship setup that involves running two cars in the USA. We have a complete Odi Bakchis schedule for his die-hard fans that want to know what he is driving and where. For this weekend, he will be in this big V8 powered Hyundai Genesis with a Vortech Supercharger kit hoping to start off with a great 2015 season.

ForrestWang.S15Silvia
5. Forrest Wang – LHD S15 Nissan Silvia
This car became the most hyped up and leaked debacle of 2015 all over the Internet last week due to our Instagram page but we will leave that be. Car looks pretty similar to last season and still carries a 2JZ engine setup and WiseFab for big angle.

Dean Kearney Shows Off Oracle Lighting Dodge Viper for 2015

DeanKearney2015.OracleLightning.DodgeViper

Dean Kearney debuts his new look Dodge Viper for the 2015 Formula Drift season. I really like the new black/red livery he has going on and it seems a nice change in wheel choice from this render as well. We have been told Dean and team has made some serious changes to the build during this off-season but not a ton of information has been given to us on exactly what has been reworked. He is carrying some partners such as SPEC Clutch, BC Racing, and AEM.  Dean’s program remains on the Achilles Radial program for tires and continues to carry Oracle Lighting as a title sponsor. Dean was my pick for one of the most improved drivers of 2014 and I think he could make a Top 10 finish for the season if he and the car improved over the off-season.
