2017 Formula Drift Motegi Super Drift Challenge [RESULTS]

2017-motegi-drift-friday-podium

For the fifth consecutive year, Motegi Wheels sponsored the tandem competition that happens at Long Beach Grand Prix, which means a nice prize pool for those drivers who stick around in Southern California after the first round of the season. This year, there would be two different competitions occuring, one Friday and one Saturday. With the expanded schedule, qualifying was skipped in favor of a random draw. Only 14 drivers would enter the event, which meant a few more bye runs this time around. But with two full nights of competition, the Grand Prix crowds got two full nights of drifting under the lights!

Forrest Wang and Ryan Litteral, who are both eligible to run in the Formula Drift Pro series but are choosing to sit the season out, would both enter the event. Formula Drift Pro 2 driver Trent Beechum would also drive in the event.

For the second consecutive year, Matt Field took home a first place trophy. Field won Friday’s competition, with Alex Heilbrunn taking home second place and Forrest Wang winning third place. Heilbrunn took home the bridesmaid trophy for the second consecutive weekend after a major collision between Heilbrunn and Field shortly after initiation was determined to be his fault. Both cars sustained pretty substantial damage in the collision, but both drivers were able to make repairs in less than 24 hours and return for the second night of action.

1st – Matt Field
2nd – Alex Heilbrunn
3rd – Forrest Wang

For the second night, the tandem brackets were again randomly drawn, and for the second consecutive evening, Alex Heilbrunn found himself in the final round. This time, he would face Forrest Wang, who has never won a Formula Drift event previously, exhibition or otherwise. Wang would emerge the victor, claiming his first career Formula Drift win. Heilbrunn earned his third consecutive carbon fiber trophy, while Dean Kearney would wheel his Dodge Viper to a third place finish.

Bridges Racing to support James Deane, Piotr Wiecek in addition to Dean Kearney for 2017

worthouse-s15 kearney-2017-livery

Bridges Racing will be supporting both James Deane and Piotr Więcek for their 2017 Formula Drift campaign in addition to Dean Kearney. Bridges Racing has supported Kearney for the past five seasons, but has supported multiple drivers in past seasons including the championship season of Daigo Saito in 2012. Deane and Więcek’s entry into Formula Drift has been some of the biggest news in the off-season, and seeing them team up with a team that has operated logistics for multiple cars in Formula Drift can only be seen as an advantage that will let them focus on learning the new courses and judging criteria.

The Worthouse Nissan S15’s are already being prepped at Bridges Racing HQ in Huntington Beach since they landed last week, and will make their competitive debut this weekend at Long Beach.

Here’s Your Chance to Gain Some Experience in Formula DRIFT

Bridges Racing
Bridges Racing and Dean Kearney are expanding and looking to fill various full and part-time positions. Any time there is a chance to get your foot in the door, it is extremely valuable, no matter what work you do. And it just so happens that a great opportunity is currently presenting itself in professional drifting for upcoming fabricators, admin, race support/prep crew, videographers, etc. looking to grow within the sport. Not only will you be working with a top level team, but you may also get to travel, work in various conditions, and build your network within the industry.

Some driver examples that have had similar experiences working on a Formula DRIFT team and learned from their experience within the sport are Rapper Dan Savage who crewed with Chelsea DeNofa before winning the 2014 PRO2 Championship, Jonathan Nerren who crewed with Vaughn Gittin JR before starting his own multi-car team competing in Formula DRIFT Canada, and Dylan Hughes who currently crews with Chris Forsberg and won the 2016 USDrift PRO/AM Series in his first full year of competition. I also know of countless others that are definitely on their way to make an impact in the sport in some form or another.

As for videographer examples, you have Mark Lenardon (late videographer for Motor Trend Magazine) who started filming with Drift Indy and Midwest Drift Union, moved on to film for Club Loose and Bloodmasters, traveled with numerous drivers in Formula DRIFT such as Tony Angelo and Geoff Stoneback, and then went on to create content and film for productions such as Hot Rod Garage and Road Kill. Sam Nalven (1/3 of Maximum Driftcast) paid his own way to attend and cover Formula DRIFT events when he started producing his “Drift Chronicles” before he worked on “Tuerck’d“, “Drift Garage“, “Off Track” and more recently with “Vaughn Gittin JR“, “Snap-On”, and “Donut Media“.

If you’re still interested and think you have the drive for it, interviews will be held this Saturday morning at the Race Shop in Huntington Beach, CA for local people and those not lucky enough to live in sunny SoCal can schedule a Skype interview. Information about drivers, team, work shop, and schedule for 2017 will be disclosed to selected applicants only. CV’s/Resume sent to info@bridgesracing.com

Gas Monkey Energy Drink Sponsors Dean Kearney for Texas

Kearney-GasMonkeyEnergy-Viper

Kearney-GasMonkey

Dean Kearney and Bridges Racing announced a new co-title partnership with Gas Monkey Energy Drink for the Texas round of Formula Drift, taking place this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. The Gas Monkey brand has grown rapidly in the past few years behind the popularity of the TV Show “Fast n Loud”, and the brand has gotten more involved with racing over the past few years. Gas Monkey also has worked on several high profile Dodge / Mopar builds, which goes hand-in-hand with the lone Dodge Viper on the Formula Drift grid.

The partnership will expand the number of energy drinks involved with Formula Drift drivers up to five as Gas Monkey Energy joins Monster Energy, Rockstar Energy, Red Bull, and NOS Energy Drink as title or co-title sponsors on the current Formula Drift grid. The newly-revealed livery looks fantastic!

10 Things I Learned at Formula Drift Seattle Round 6

FredricAasbo
10. Fredric Aasbo Falls for a 6-1 Record
It almost seems like beating Fredric Aasbo this year is worthy of a trophy itself. Odi Bakchis all time before this weekend was 0-6 against Fredirc Aasbo. In fact, his most recent loss was last round at Formula Drift Montreal so surely that was fresh on his mind before they met this past weekend. These two drivers faced off against each other in the Great 8 and Odi Bakchis finally got his first career victory over Fredric Aasbo on the seventh attempt. The first time the two met was actually at Evergreen Speedway in 2013. Odi took that victory and momentum of beating Aasbo all the way to his second career victory.

9. Make Up Your Mind Already Judges
The judges played it way too safe this weekend when it came to making tough calls. Instead of really thinking about a run we got the OMT show. I found myself chanting No More Time towards the end of this event. We had around 10 OMT battles which means 33% of battles got a One More Time call. Sorry guys, the margins are just not that razor thin in this sport. Two battles that didn’t deserve an OMT call off the top of my head if you want a talking point are (Tyler McQuarrie vs. Ken Gushi in Great 8) and (Jhonnattan Castro vs. Tanner Foust Top 16)

8. Vaughn Gittin Jr. Beat Dean Kearney in My Eyes
My other “shot” at the judges comes in the form of the Dean Kearney vs. Vaughn Gittin Jr. battle in the Top 16. I was doing a battle by battle recap for Driving Line this weekend and all of my notes favored Vaughn Gittin in this tandem run. I just felt like the overall impact of Vaughn Gittin’s follow run had to carry more weight than just focusing on outer zone one. If OZ1 is so important, why did they bother drifting the rest of the track? This was my big head scratcher of the event and sadly my #JUSTICE4VAUGHN hashtag got no traction. This call really hurt him in his championship chase to make the decision even worse in the big picture of things.

2016 Formula Drift Motegi Super Drift Challenge [RESULTS]

MattField

The Motegi Super Drift during the Long Beach Grand Prix had a pretty weak drivers list of 11 that included some Pro 2 drivers to make the field larger than a Top 8. The podium was swept by three drivers who are starting a 2016 season with a new tire company. The final four saw Michael Essa versus Odi Bakchis (#1 qualifier) in the battle of the show that Odi was given the edge on and advanced into the finals. Matt Field made easy work of Dean Kearney in the Final Four with a big mistake from Dean pushing him into the finals.

2015 Formula Drift Awards – Comeback of the Year – Dean Kearney

DeanKearney

Dean Kearney made the biggest comeback of the 2015 Formula Drift season with his wild performance in New Jersey. The comeback of the year is based on a driver qualifying at a terrible rank and then finishing the highest in the event. Basically, you are calculating the positions between your qualifying score and finishing result. Dean Kearney won with a score of 19 place improvement at Wall Speedway. He finished the event in 2nd but managed to only qualify 21st. Congrats to him for winning this Formula Drift Award in 2015.

Dean Kearney Bringing American Muscle over for IDC Mondello Park

DeanKearney

Dean Kearney is bringing over his Dodge Viper (one of his two) to Ireland so he can compete in the Irish Drift Championship final round at Mondello Park. I’ve always been told by the Irish fans that Mondello Park is the one event you want to attend if you ever want to see Irish drifting and fan insanity on display. I’ve been told they are expecting 10k+ for a wild series finale. Dean is shipping over one of his 8.3L Dodge Viper’s to join up with his Achilles teammates at the end of this month. \
