FIA International Drifting Cup roster is released

fia-drifting-cup-roster

FIA World Drifting Cup released their roster of 26 drivers today. From the list, seven drivers have Formula Drift ties. Current Formula Drift competitors Michael Essa, Matt Field, and Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis will be competing at the first event, scheduled to happen on September 30th and October 1st in Japan. Past competitors Charles Ng, Daigo Saito, and Masashi Yokoi are also scheduled to compete. 2009 and 2010 Formula Drift Asia champion Tengku Djan Ley will also be returning to competition for this event. Djan Ley has been away from drifting for a few years, but will be returning to compete in this monumental event. Also of note, Steve “Baggsy” Biagioni will also be competing. Biagioni was awarded a Formula Drift license for the 2017 season, but ended up not competing. He later put out a pretty impressive viral video dubbed “Monster Drift 2” with Daigo Saito earlier this year.

Who are you most excited to watch in this event?

Charles Ng in BMW for 2017 and Teams Up with Essa

charlesng

Charles Ng is running a E46 BMW for the 2017 Formula Drift season built by Michael Essa. Charles Ng debuted in Formula Drift in Michael Essa’s old FC Mazda RX-7 so they have done some business together in the past. Charles Ng always has had promise but suffers car issue after car issue with his G37. It will be interested to see how he will look in a Michael Essa built BMW chassis.

10 Things I Learned About Formula Drift Orlando

JCatrso.ScionFRS
10. Can Jhonnattan Castro Keep Finding that Potential?
The last time I remember Castro driving this good was at Homestead in Miami two season ago. He actually looked solid and consistent out of the box and it wasn’t the biggest shock to me when he took out Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the Top 16. Jhonnattan needs to spend some serious time figuring out why he manages to drift so good in Florida. I cannot figure out if its because he is close to home, the humidity, his family/friends around, or just a random round he focuses in on drifting. He has the driver ability and talents in my eyes. Now, he just needs to dig up what makes him more focused and repeat repeat repeat.

ChrisForsberg.Slow
9. Chris Forsberg’s 370z Looked Slow and Off the Pace
This season seems to of left behind Chris Forsberg’s 370z in terms of pace and speed around the course. All weekend at Orlando Speed World his car looked visually slower than some other teams on the grid. This was highlighted in a major way with his battle against Kristaps Bluss in the Final Four. If you watch the runs, Forsberg enters on Bluss door but then the BMW just powers through the course and speeds up at angle around the bank and Forsberg’s 370z cannot seem to do that. The car isn’t so slow that is belongs in Pro 2 or anything but his speed while drifting could make the difference between a third championship and finishing fourth place.

NoTireDrifting
8. Drifting without Tires
The rule changes with a tire debead seemingly have confused about 90% of Formula Drift fans out there. I will try and clear it up quickly but it might require its own follow up post. Last year the rule was – a tire debead at anytime in a tandem battle resulted in a loss. In 2016, the rules state you cannot fix a tire debead but it does not result or impact a zero score. So, for example, Jeff Jones in qualifying lost a tire and kept drifting around the course. He was given a 70 for his run and the tire had no impact directly on the score but you have to imagine it slowed him down impacting his score from him having say, four tires. So, if you are in the first part of a tandem battle, you lose, because a car without a tire doesn’t pass tech to run again. If its the second run of a battle and you can keep going then its fair game. Now, here are the list of battles impacted by this rule. I respect Formula Drift for putting a line in the sand and I think teams need to figure out other ways than running 11 PSI in tires to get grip out of the car. Also, in the case of JTP – let the dude put air in his tires for crying out loud after contact and deflation.

1. Nate Hamilton Pro 2 Top 16 Battle (Loss Due to Tire Debead)
2. Mad Mike Whiddett Top 32 Battle versus Ken Gushi (Loss Due to First Round)
3. Fredric Aasbo Top 16 Battle vs Kyle Mohan (Loss Tire in follow and still won)
4. Justin Pawlak Top 16 Battle after contact with Forsberg (Ran but Spun Due to Low Tire Pressure)
5. Fredric Aasbo Final 4 Battle with Tyler McQuarrie (Lost on First Run and Tire Remounted)

Charles Ng Debuts Loaner Nissan 240sx for Formula Drift Orlando

CharlesNg.S14Nissan240sx
Charles Ng will be running a familiar S-Chassis this weekend in Orlando. Charles Ng has had some issues with his Infiniti G37 this season and mechanical problems resulted in him being the only driver unable to qualify at Road Atlanta leaving the field to 31 drivers. He has now loaned Juha Rintanen’s S14 for the weekend and rewrapped it to match his orange/matte black look. Juha Rintanen will finally be debuting his S15 Silvia we previewed a little while back here.

Charles Ng Shows off his Infiniti G37 WiseFab Kit in Pre Season Testing

This new WiseFab kit looks pretty insane after seeing it in testing with Charles Ng here at Willow Springs. The flick on the car is pretty insane. This new kit just arriving in the USA is for the Nissan 370z and Infiniti G37 platform. We will see in just over a month how the kit seems to work and hold up in Formula Drift competition. It will be interesting to see if Charles Ng shoots up the competition leaderboard in 2016 as other drivers such as Ken Gushi seemed to win more battles once switching to WiseFab.

2015 Formula Drift Round 4 New Jersey Qualifying [RESULTS]

Gushi-Atlanta

So 37 drivers showed up for New Jersey which is one of the better driver counts for a Wall Speedway event that we can remember. I guess narrowing down the field just swept away the non-serious players. Two drivers (James Evans and Charles Ng) failed to get a score so only three drivers with a score didn’t qualify. 78 was the cutoff score which is pretty high compared to the average. Here is how they guys finished and who the tandem battles will be in the morning –

1. Ken Gushi 93 (46 Style)
2. Fredric Aasbo 93 (44 Style)
3. Justin Pawlak 92 (46 Style)
