MDU really took the “midwest” part of our name to heart this year. We decided in the preseason that we would roll the dice and step out of our comfort zone and trek further west to put some of the racetracks in that part of the country to work.
First on the list was Mid America Motorplex in Pacific Junction, Iowa. It’s in an area so flat that when passing it on the interstate that runs immediately parallel to the track, it’s extremely easy to not even realize there’s a track there. However, even with the simple ambiance of a railroad and corn fields, MAM offers up an outstanding facility, track staff, and extremely rad road course. We knew the risk of going that far west, and the roster reflected that. But as soon as load-in began and the track walk was done, the drivers were hyped and the party began.
The course layout was relatively simple with a drag race entry into 3 back-to-back sweepers, so practice went smooth and the tandem action started early. After a morning full of practice, qualifying went off without a hitch and, as opposed to R1 at Gateway, the Top 16 (actually 15) was set.
