2016 USDRIFT x MDU BRO/AM EVENT AT DOMINION RACEWAY [RESULTS]

2016_USD_RD4_podium

USDrift and Midwest Drift Union joined forces earlier this month for their first ever BRO/AM collaboration event at the newly opened Dominion Raceway road course for both of their fourth and final rounds of the 2016 season. Each series would run their own Top 16 brackets with the winners from each series’ event competing against each other for bragging rights of the best on this side of the Mississippi River, as well as winning their weight in Smartmouth Brewing Company beer.

Repeating a similar end to that of the 2015 season, Austin Meeks from Spartanburg, SC would win the last event of the USDrift season again. This time Meeks would win in his Committed Service Brand swapped LSX V8-powered 1996 Nissan 240SX running on Achilles Radial Tires. Riley Sexsmith, from Hamilton, Ontario in his 2007 NV Auto 2JZ powered Subaru Impreza STI running on Achilles Radial Tires would take the win in the last event of the Midwest Drift Union season.

Since the final tandem was an exhibition match, the judges from both series would vote and if there was a tie, the announcer would cast the deciding vote with help from the crowd if needed. However, after both runs, the judges went with 3 votes for Meeks, 2 votes for Sexsmith, and 1 vote for a “One More Time”; giving the win and a 154lb assortment of Smartmouth Brewing Company beer to Meeks for the win.

2015 USDRIFT Pro AM Series Round 4 at VIR [RESULTS]

USDriftRound4

The 4th and final round of the 2015 USDrift PRO/AM Series took place at VIRginia International Raceway leaving only three drivers with a chance to walk away with the championship. Austin Meeks from Spartanburg, SC did everything possible in his Sikky Manufacturing swapped LSX powered 1996 Nissan 240SX on Achilles Radials to try and take the championship by qualifying first and winning the event, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead from Concord, NC native Jonathan Nerren going into the event. Nerren would end up qualifying second and finishing second at Round 4 in his 1995 Magnuson Superchargers Nissan 240SX on Zenna Tires, giving him the 2015 Championship by just a mere 21 points over Meeks. Yonkers, NY resident, by way of Ireland, Fred Keogh in his LS3 powered Nissan 350Z on Achilles Radials would enter the final round third in points, qualify third, finish the event in third, and end the season third overall in points. Nerren, Meeks, and Keogh also earned their 2016 Formula DRIFT PRO2 licenses after the event.

My Trip to the Dominican Republic for CDCD Round 3 [RECAP]

JCastroRacing

I hopped on a plane to Santo Domingo without much expectation or information about drifting in the Dominican Republic. Jhonnattan Castro, running in Formula Drift, was the extent of my knowledge of drifting in the Caribbean as a whole. That is about as much information as most of you I would imagine. So I packed a couple things and hit LAX for a long journey to the Dominican. My first stop was JFK where I had a couple hour layover and linked up with Formula Drift judge Brian Eggert who was guest judging the same event.

DeltaFlight.JFKtoDominicanRepublic

Here we are on the plane leaving from JFK. Brian was slated to be a guest judge for the weekend and he also didn’t know very much about the Dominican Republic series. So basically we were flying to the Caribbean and we didn’t know anything other than that Carlos, the series owner, was going to pick us up from the airport. We landed and were taken out to Boca Marina for some fish and then headed to Autodromo Mobil 1 to watch practice.

AutodromoMobil1

The track itself sits right outside Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, and also is placed right along the gorgeous Caribbean Ocean. The far left of the course is a drag strip and part of the larger grand prix course here which the drifters do not use. The drifting starts right at the pit out area and heads towards the ocean around that big turn making an S onto the far right straight. Then the drifters take the kart track turn in to finish off the course with a slow technical element and shut down once they get back to the far straight.

An Adventure out to HyperFest for US Drift Round 1

HyperFest

So after spending the week in Southern Florida for Formula Drift Round 3 I managed to spend just a few days at home back in Los Angeles before hopping on a flight to Washington DC. The last time I ventured out to Summit Point wasn’t what I would call a fun experience. I had trekked out in my G35 from Atlanta to watch Formula Drift use the Shenandoah Circuit for a course. Hyperfest opted to use that same track for a parking lot!

Hyperfest.JudgingTower

For qualifying I got invited up into the judges tower built at one end of Main Course. The track is technical, very very fast, and pretty much anywhere around the track you have an amazing view. Here is David Bellomo taking his 1JZ powered 240sx around the course in car where he qualified 9th so you can get a feel for this track.
