Forrest Wang Lost – The Devil’s Advocate Perspective

ForrestWang.AMdrift

Behind the hype train of hate, confusion, and misinformation I am delaying the 10 Things post until tomorrow to whip up a full and in-depth review of the Forrest Wang vs. Chris Forsberg Top 16 battle. The fans and viewers keep screaming for consistency and rules to apply so Formula Drift can be more clear cut. Well, let’s dig deep into this one.

FormulaDriftAccelerationMap

This map was displayed clearly and discussed during the mandatory drivers meeting. This is referred to as an acceleration/deceleration map. The denotations of green should be a section of the course where you are on throttle and the red sections are acceptable braking/slowing down areas. This is a pretty clear understanding of the course. To promote very close proximity and tandem battles you have these maps so drifters can run close tandem and understand/expect where drivers will scrub speed/slow down.

MadMikeWhiddett

In fact, Mad Mike Whiddett addressed this very topic in the drivers meeting after going over the accel/deaccel map. Mad Mike went on to ask about having big angle off the bank and slowing up/scrubbing speed. The judges replied to him no, they want to see a nice balance of angle and speed, while being on throttle, to set up a re-initiation for outer zone two (seen above).

2016 Formula Drift – Round 3 Orlando [RESULTS]

Aasbo-2016-Atlanta

After an early top 32 exit in Atlanta, Aasbo took the championship lead by winning in Orlando. The final battle between Aasbo and Kristaps Bluss was a bit lackluster as Bluss went off course in his lead run, but at least we had a final run compared to last year. The win is the first for Nexen Tire, which is the 12th different tire company to earn an event win in Formula Drift. Chris Forsberg earned the final rung on the podium over Tyler McQuarrie by virtue of qualifying higher. Bluss is the 39th driver to earn a Formula Drift trophy over the years.

Here are the final results from Atlanta:

1st – Fredric Aasbo – Rockstar Energy Drink Nexen Tire Scion tC
2nd – Kristaps Bluss – HGK Racing Achilles Tire BMW E46
3rd – Chris Forsberg – NOS Energy Drink Hankook Tire Nissan 370Z
4th – Tyler McQuarrie – Mobile 1 Chevy Camaro

Tyler McQuarrie Shows Off 2016 Livery

TylerMcQuarrie.2016FormulaDrift

Tyler McQuarrie is returning for the 2016 Formula Drift season in his Chevrolet Camaro. Tyler continues to be with Falken Tire moving into the new year along with Mobil 1. His new partnership for 2016 appears to be with Safecraft. The GoPro branding does seem to be reduced for the 16 season which is happening across Formula Drift and noted here. From our reports, it sounds like Tyler McQuarrie will also be assisting the likes of Pat Mordaunt again for 2016 in his 350z.

Falken Tire Expands Formula Drift Program for 2016

MattField.Bank

Well, we announced the Yokohama Tire was bailing on Formula Drift late last year and it looks like Matt Field found his new home at Falken Tire. He joins Odi Bakchis who we announced earlier this week who will be back on the 615K tire as well. Tyler McQuarrie is also going to make a return to the program for 2016 who is one of the most winning Falken Tire drivers in the series history. The rest of the team is the same for 2016 with Pat Goodin, Dai Yoshihara, and Justin Pawlak.

2015 Formula Drift Round 4 New Jersey Qualifying [RESULTS]

Gushi-Atlanta

So 37 drivers showed up for New Jersey which is one of the better driver counts for a Wall Speedway event that we can remember. I guess narrowing down the field just swept away the non-serious players. Two drivers (James Evans and Charles Ng) failed to get a score so only three drivers with a score didn’t qualify. 78 was the cutoff score which is pretty high compared to the average. Here is how they guys finished and who the tandem battles will be in the morning –

1. Ken Gushi 93 (46 Style)
2. Fredric Aasbo 93 (44 Style)
3. Justin Pawlak 92 (46 Style)
