Sikky team sits out 2016 Formula Drift season

Sikky Manufacturing also took to social media this week to announce that they will forego supporting their Formula Drift team of James Evans and “Rapper” Dan Savage for the 2016 season to focus on their V8 swap kit business instead. Savage was the 2014 Pro 2 Champion, while Evans finished fifth in 2014 and second in 2015 in the Pro 2 ranks. Both drivers competed in the Pro class for the entire 2015 season, with Savage finishing 25th and Evans finishing in 34th. Sikky will continue to have a presence on the Formula Drift grid as they sponsor several drivers including 2015 Pro 2 champion Alex Heilbrunn. Savage tells us he will be spotting for a Pro 2 driver this season, so he will still be available at a few events if fans are seeking autographs.

Sad to see the 2014 Pro 2 champion join the 2015 Pro class Rookie of the Year Masashi Yokoi on the sidelines for the 2016 season.

New Formula Drift Texas Layout with POV Footage

Here is the new Round 6 layout for Texas Motor Speedway’s Formula Drift event. The track could have used a course fix after the two pretty terrible rounds we had seen at Texas Motor Speedway in the past. This layout looks interesting but somewhat runs against the other layout style of Formula Drift which tends to focus on max speed at entry and slowing down around course. Luckily for all of you, XDC ran this exact same course in 2012 so here is an in car video of Rapper Dan Savage running the course in a 400whp machine.

Formula Drift qualifying at Evergreen Speedway was an interesting one. It went quickly but so many drivers scored a zero due to the rain and then transition to dry during the weekend. It was a tough one and we just wish that the weather would behave for a weekend already. Here is how they qualified-

2015 Formula Drift Round 4 New Jersey Qualifying [RESULTS]

So 37 drivers showed up for New Jersey which is one of the better driver counts for a Wall Speedway event that we can remember. I guess narrowing down the field just swept away the non-serious players. Two drivers (James Evans and Charles Ng) failed to get a score so only three drivers with a score didn’t qualify. 78 was the cutoff score which is pretty high compared to the average. Here is how they guys finished and who the tandem battles will be in the morning –

2015 Formula Drift Road Atlanta Round 2 [RESULTS]

Road Atlanta is always a fun battle ground for the top drifting drivers in the world. Robbie Nishida made a lackluster debut in his Infiniti G37 failing to make a qualifying pass and Dai Yoshihara had issues in his Subaru BRZ and didn’t make a pass either. The bottom of the group was quite close and Matt Field even had to drift his way out of 33rd place on his second pass to stay in the show. Here is how the tandem battles look for today –

A Look at the Sikky Sub Frame for Your Drift Car

As I was wandering around Long Beach something caught my eye in the Sikky pit area. On display was a highly modded S13 subframe with a massive rear that looked like something you would see in a MAC truck. I had to learn what it was all about. James Evans was there to fill me in on the details. He explained to me that this was one of Sikky’s Quick Change Rear and Subframe setups.

The whole concept behind having a quick change rear on your drift car is that all tracks are different and depending on the course layout you can find yourself in a situation where your gearing is far from ideal. The quick change rear will allow you to make changes to your gear ratio in less than five minutes. There is a limited amount of time to set the car up for each track and the quicker you can get back out on course the better. Changing an entire rear out just doesn’t make sense when there is an option like this. Now Sikky wasn’t the first to start putting these rears into drift cars but they have definitely refined it to a new level and made it into a production part. Having them ready to go on the shelf instead of a custom made to order. What separates the Sikky sub frame and rear set-up from the competitors is the technology and process they use to both develop and manufacture the product. There is a lot of time and effort in the R&D stage to locate the ideal position for the rear. Using the FARO arm they scan the underside of the car, sub frame, mounting points and then create a complete CAD drawing of the back half of each car model they develop a kit for. Then using that info they position the rear perfectly in this 3d precision environment. The end result is optimal angles and clearance of all CV joints, driveshaft’s, and axles as well as perfect placement and alignment. All of this maximizing strength and reliability of their product.

There is much more to properly setting up the rear end than just welding it in place using a tape measure or ruler. Their methods allow the guys at Sikky to get accuracy down to +/- .005 of an inch when placing the rear into the sub frame. 10 Things I Learned About Formula Drift Irwindale Last Weekend

10. The Best Formula Drift Event in History

FormulaDriftIrwindale This is the first time in Formula Drift history the championship came down to the last battle. A sold out Irwindale Speedway cheered and screamed as tandem battles wound up in crashes, door banging, and dramatic endings. Fredric Aasbo even beat Chris Forsberg in the Final Four but just fell short of his first championship by losing to Daigo Saito.

9. A Championship Based on Qualifying

I will be one of the first people to admit or complain about how boring qualifying is when you look at the big picture of the sport. It drags on, has a slow pace, and generally doesn’t entertain like tandem competition. However, Fredric Aasbo lost the championship based on him qualifying consistently worse than Chris Forsberg this season making it quite impactful overall. Fredric even won more tandem battles through the season and successfully beat Chris Forsberg on several occasions to show he could of earned it but qualifying seems to be his glaring mistake for the season.

8. Dean Kearney Keeps Making this Dodge Viper Work

Dean is one of the drivers who just kept improving throughout the 2014 season and he continued to impress me at Irwindale. He banged up the car a few times and after talking to him at Irwindale, he shared with me that his tandem battle versus Dai Yoshihara was done without front brake rotors (basically no front brakes) which resulted in his tandem follow error. It is pretty amazing how he makes this big boat work around the Formula Drift courses in the modern era.

7. Pro 2 Had Some Positives and Negatives

Some of the Pro 2 battles this weekend delivered top billing and a huge crowd reaction for some battles while one tandem battle in particular was the worst professional drift tandem sequence I had seen in my life. In six laps due to two One More Times we had four spins and three inactive chase runs. All and all I would consider Pro 2 a success and will be interested to see how it grows for 2015, especially with the new influx of drivers who couldn’t make the 32 cut.

2014 Formula Drift Championship [RESULTS]

All seven rounds of Formula Drift are in the books for 2014. Chris Forsberg ends up the 2014 champion but a margin of just 11 points which came down to the very last tandem battle of 2014. Daigo Saito finally had a motor hold together and was able to make a huge jump in the championship points as well. All Top 32 drivers are given a Pro license for next year while 33 and beyond are relegated into Pro 2. Here is how they finished:

2014 Formula Drift Pro 2 Final Points & Promotion [STANDINGS]

Congratulations to Dan Savage for winning the inaugural Formula D Pro 2 championship! While we posted about how the qualifying points don’t matter in Pro 1, Savage solely won the Pro 2 championship based on his qualifying scores, particularly his top qualifier position on Thursday.  Both Stoneback and Savage tied with exactly 260 tandem points, and the extra 5.5 points that Savage earned on Thursday via qualifying are what put him over the edge. Had Savage qualified anywhere from 4th through 8th position, he would have earned exactly 4.5 points in qualifying alongside Stoneback and the championship would have been tied. Hopefully Formula Drift changes the points structure in future seasons to avoid this sort of scenario.

Alongside Savage, a huge congratulations goes out to all 8 drivers who have earned or retained their Pro 1 license through the new ‘Promotion’ system:
