We just noticed that Matt Powers was added to the Pro 2 drivers list on the Formula Drift website. This could be a pretty interesting return as Matt is easily one of the most fan favorite drivers in the series history. Matt Powers has been active overseas with special events like the Redbull Drift Shifters in New Zealand. Matt even brought in new sponsorship with Fenix Performance for the season which debuted at Drift Shifters recently as well. What do you think of his potential return?
The event fired up at local time 4:30pm here in California and seemingly ran smoother than any drift event I have seen. The event packed a star studded cast into the heart of Auckland, New Zealand for a Great 8 that was aired on Redbull TV. The format saw every driver make a pass and the bottom four scores were eliminated from competition. Then out of the Final Four, the top two drivers moved into a final which saw another.
Sit back and get ready to tune into Redbull Drift Shifters tomorrow while you should be working. It appears December 5th at 4:30pm PST and 7:30pm EST will be the local air times to tune into the show in Auckland. The event is packed with a ton of professional drifters you will be familiar with including Mad Mike Whiddett, Tyler McQuarrie, Chris Forsberg, Daigo Saito, and Ken Nomura. The best news of the weekend in NZ is that Matt Powers has made a drift return to defend his championship title at this event.

Matt Powers is out to defend his title at Drift Shifters in Auckland with his 240sx. Matt beat event host Mad Mike last year to take home top honors and is set to return to defend his title. His title sponsor in Fenix Radiators based down in New Zealand. His tire partner will be Nitto for the weekend and other companies like Parts Shop Max are supporting his return to drift. His pit crew will be Martin Muench from Parts Shop Max USA and Adam Hedges of C’s Garage. Here is a full drivers list for the big Drift Shifters event next month.
The international stars stacked up for Red Bull Drift Shifters is probably the biggest in drifting history since the Red Bull World Championship in Southern California back in 2009. If you live in Auckland the event is free on December 6th. Here are some stars coming to New Zealand:
Mad Mike Whiddett
Chris Forsberg (Nissan 370z)
Tyler McQuarrie (Chevrolet Camaro)
Ryan Tuerck (Scion FRS)
Daigo Saito (Lexus IS250 – FD Asia Car)
Ken Nomura (Nissan R34 Skyline)
Jake Jones (Nissan S13 240sx)
IDC is coming into a wild Round 5 this weekend with Japfest. The car is built/maintained by Darren McNamara and was used at Global Warfare by Matt Powers. Now that Vaughn Gittin Jr. walked out of KOE Valencia with a win we wonder if Chris Forsberg can back that up with a win this weekend for a true American takeover of the European drift world.
Matt Powers is heading over to France to join them for Round 6 of the French Drift Championship. He will actually be driving a LHD Ford Mustang owned by Jerome Vassia. The event takes place in the French Alps and is a touge style course. The French series does use a cool telemetry model in addition to the three judges. Check the video below to see how the series went last year.
Darren McNamara brought out his refreshed MCNSPORT 86 for Global Warfare at Mondello Park. Tomorrow he will be squaring up against other Formula Drift drivers such as Daigo Saito, Robbie Nishida, and Matt Powers who have all traveled to Ireland to do battle. You can also tune into the Livestream tomorrow morning which we detailed here.
