So many people have hit me up about the “seriousness” of my editorial I put in Issue 15. I wrote somewhat of a follow up to it on my blog (www.wreckedmagazine.com/joeyredmond) but also wanted to post the editorial in here to further the discussion and see what the readers of Wrecked Magazine felt about the issue at hand.
” THE FOREIGN INVASION
The buzz around Long Beach centered around the increasing number of foreign drifters who arrived in the 2010 season. A couple of the drivers really impressed the media and crowd, like James Deane and Fredric Aasbo. Some of the other foreign guys didn’t fare so well, being eliminated early in the day or not even qualifying.
With that observation, it crosses my mind that maybe this sponsorship money could be going to others–perhaps to the pool of highly talented American drivers around the country? The appeal of these drivers seems to be that since they drive professionally already, it is assumed that they can easily adjust here in the United States. It’s not the 2005 drifting season anymore, and the standard set for drifters these days is set pretty high.
I challenge the team owners in the future, to actually look into the driving talent that can be found here in the United States. The United States probably has more events in a month than any other country, and one of the only weekly drifting events in the world, at Adams Motorsport Park in Riverside, California.
I would like to commend Gary Gardella for putting Steve Angerman in a driver development program and having him run a car in the XDC this season, while spotting for Ryan Tuerck in Formula Drift. This is the kind of thing this sport needs to move forward and grow on a professional level.
With all of that being said, I have nothing against the foreign guys who are in the sport and continue to come over. I enjoy all of them participating in Formula Drift, along with the flair they bring from their home nation. I just feel that team owners and sponsors are overlooking the very talented driver pool that is clearly sitting right in front of them. That concludes my food for thought.”
