10 Things I Learned about Formula Drift Road Atlanta

10.Qualifying Needs to be Fixed
I think the judges do much better than the majority when it comes to tandem judging. I normally voice my opinions when I disagree with them but 95% of the time they are making good calls. However, they are awful at ranking qualifying runs. I think many factors play into this but the order you are seeded in qualifying tends to impact your score to a great extreme. Road Atlanta had quite a few scoring inaccuracies so I figured I should bring it up in this Top 10. Anyway, qualifying needs a revamp in Formula Drift but I don’t have the ideas to make it happen. Anyone have thoughts on how to make it more accurate and entertaining?

9. Time to Wake Up on Travis Reeder
Travis Reeder has landed on the podium for his first two Pro 2 events in his career. This driver from the northwest really looks like a serious contender for the future. He seems to have the mental game figured out and is just driving his way into a serious championship lead. After two rounds he has an alarming 78 point lead in the Pro 2 championship.

8. The Era of European Domination is Upon Us?
The European drivers really dominated Road Atlanta this past weekend. The podium was a complete European driver sweep and nobody in the grid looks like they have an answer for the European rising. The top three drivers in the championship are all European (James Deane/Ireland – Dean Kearney/Ireland – Fredric Aasbo/Norway) and other Europeans such as Kristaps Bluss have done well this season. Does anyone have an answer for the European domination in 2017?

7. Formula Drift Needs More Utes
Since I was at Road Atlanta in person I got to watch this insane Ute run for the first time. This thing is really big and it looks really cool drifting around the track. Josh Robinson makes that thing looks pretty good and exciting. It does make me hope we can get a larger variety of chassis in the sport moving forward.

10 Things I Learned from Formula Drift New Jersey Round 4

BMWM3

10. The BMW chassis is looking Hot in 2016
Man, the BMW chassis is looking like it should be hot property after this drift season. BMW has seen a podium at 75% of the events this year and some of the most notable drifting has come from the likes of Essa, Moen, Heilbrunn, Bluss, and DeNofa all in the BMW camp. The changes in the series seem to favoring this chassis in a big way.

9. Vaughn Gittin Jr. Ties Sam Hubinette for Event Wins Record
Vaughn Gittin Jr. battled his good friend Chris Forsberg in the finals at Wall Speedway and won! It was also a tie-breaker between the two friends. Chris Forsberg and Vaughn Gittin Jr. both had 8 event wins going into this event in New Jersey. It also happened to be a home track for both drivers who grew up within hour of Wall. Tons of narrative and storyline here as Vaughn Gittin Jr. prevailed and tied the record holder Sam Hubinette now with 9 event victories. An even crazier point made by our stats guru Jacob Leveton, Vaughn’s first win actually came after Sam Hubinette’s last win of their respective careers.

ForrestWang
8. Forrest Wang Retirement is Tough to Swallow
Forrest Wang retiring from Formula Drift is a tough one to realize and swallow for fans. He has the best drifting style in Formula Drift but all good things must come to an end. I also see him coming back before the end of this season but that is just pure speculation that I have no evidence for. I am kind of bummed that the Wang/Forsberg battle managed to overshadow what was a super exciting event. If you missed the event or have live under a rock, here is our analysis of the Top 16 battle.

10 Things I Learned from Formula Drift Long Beach

FormulaDrift.TheRain

10. The MVP of the Weekend – The Weather
The biggest game changer of the weekend in Long Beach was the rain. I was on site this weekend and when the rain started it was unbelievable how much oil and junk came up from the parking lot. Keep in mind, turn 9 through 10B are basically parking spaces used by the convention center and aquarium on a daily basis. The large issue at hand wasn’t just the rain but the oils and things it took up from the ground. If I would have known people would claim that Formula Drift cannot be done in the rain – I would have taken pictures of this gross water. Let’s keep in mind that it also doesn’t frequently rain in Southern California so the amount of junk coming up from the pavement was huge in scale. The ground was so inconsistent that huge zero traction patches were found across the course where the driver would basically become a passenger as several described it to me in the car. I am one of the first people to criticize Formula Drift when I think they do the wrong thing and everything this weekend was handled perfectly. The drivers wanted a set qualifying and nobody spoke up against it from what I saw and heard in the drivers meeting. With just 32 teams it just happened to work out and lead to the best Top 16 in Formula Drift history.

9. Kyle Mohan Debuts Most Exciting New Car with his Mazda MX-5
It was pretty clear to me that Kyle Mohan debuted the most exciting new car of the 2016 season. The pre-season buzz when I released his Mazda MX-5 to the public was huge. The car didn’t quite looked dialed in and was very snappy over the race weekend. Long Beach is very different from the other seven courses coming up so I am trying not to read too much into his performance. For him to be a contender in 2016, the car seems like it needs some work. Also, while he is working on the car I think he should invest in some wide body front fenders.

unspecified-12
8. Cameron Moore Was Best Rookie on the Weekend
The rookie class of 2016 is sitting in a five way tie for Rookie of the Year right now since they all lost in Top 32 and no qualifying points were issued for the weekend. Cameron Moore looked most likely to win his Top 32 battle against Chris Forsberg. He did a really impressive follow run and spun on his lead run that most likely would’ve earned him at least an OMT if he kept pedaling around the course. Cameron Moore impressed me with his ability to handle the wet conditions better than most people in the paddock. I know he hails from the Pacific Northwest so he might not even know what the sun looks like yet. He looked comfortable and uninitiated being in the main event so I will keep my eye on him over the next couple rounds of Formula Drift.

KenGushi

Ken Gushi released a look very similar to his old livery with a couple new sponsors resulting the biggest changes. His big move this season was to Nexen Tire. The Scion Racing brand has been kept under the closing of Scion and is now SR by Toyota. Ken Gushi remains with KW Suspension, Greddy, and Rays for the new season as well. Ken had his best season in career history in 2015 and is surely looking to win a championship in 2016.
