2015 Holley LS Fest [GALLERY]

NateHamilton LSFest2015

This year Holley LS Fest had the most heavy hitters this event has ever seen! Alex Heilbrun came all the way from California in his 1000hp E46 BMW joined by Joon Maeng who made the trip in his Nissan 240sx. Nate Hamilton traveled up with Pat Goodin and the winner Josh McGuire made the trip out from Texas. So many quality builds and big horsepower LS drift machines converged on Kentucky last weekend. Huge thanks to Chad Lunn for the hard work at taking photos!

10 Things I Learned from Formula Drift Round 4 New Jersey

DeanKearney

10. Dean Kearney – Irish Future with an American V10
In my opinion, if you could throw Dean Kearney in one of these Top 10 Formula Drift builds he could make a run at the championship. He has a car I would argue probably struggles to fall in the Top 20 Formula Drift builds. Now that Darren McNamara has exited stage right it feels Dean Kearney has taken the torch as the top Irish drifter in America. He fell just short of a victory which I feel the weather played a big impact. Since the runs went out of order, he did his Top 4 run in the dry where Aasbo got to run his Top 4 battle in the rain in addition to the Finals. Looking forward, Dean Kearney is in 11th place but is headed to Seattle where he got his first podium in the past.

9. Vaughn Gittin Jr. Needs to Give Up on Season and Debut 2015 Mustang RTR
Vaughn Gittin Jr. hasn’t had a stellar season by his standards at all. While he is only 117 points behind Ryan Tuerck in the lead, I find that with three rounds left he isn’t going to make up the gap at 39 points an event on Tuerck or Bakchis. With that said, I would rather him just retire the old S197 Mustang chassis and debut his S550 (2015 Mustang RTR). I got to see the car drift in person at Street Driven Tour VIR and the car looks and sounds way better than his old chassis. Let’s get the new 2015 on the track competing in Formula Drift!

JoonMaeng
8. Joon Maeng is the Only Driver to Not Qualify Under New Structure
Joon Maeng had an up and down 2014 season but nothing has prepared him for the disaster that is 2015 with his BMW Z4. With a 39 driver grid this season he is the only driver left to not qualify for an event yet. One good event could bring him safely into the Top 32 since he is only 51 points behind 32nd place as we stand so he still has some hope. He needs to invest in some serious testing time before these next rounds and start getting some points on the board. I would suggest diving in Pro 2 for the next three rounds to try and either defend his Pro position or at least snag some extra practice laps.

Joon Maeng Set with 2JZ Powered BMW Z4 for 2015 Formula Drift Season

JoonMaeng

I finally caught up with Joon Maeng tonight and learned some cool facts about his new 2015 Formula Drift program. That street driven BMW Z4 you have seen him post photos of is still in tact as a daly driver/practice drift car. He has a new chassis that Design Craft is doing the fabrication on and Duttweiler Racing has taken the task of building an insane 2JZ engine for the official Formula Drift build. Lucas Oil, MAV TV, and Protect the Harvest are his three title sponsors for the 2015 season. His last surprise of the new season is he is moving to Achilles Radial.

JoonMaeng.LucasOilS13

Joon Maeng has even revamped his 240sx for the new 2015 season which will be used for demos, charity events, LS Fest, and perhaps some drag racing. You probably know we are huge fans and drifting sponsors of LS Fest which happens every September in Kentucky. The car has kept its huge V8 power plant and got a bump in horsepower up to 1125! It sounds like Joon has a new and strong 2015 season planned with two purpose built drift cars.

Run a Lap with Joon Maeng and his 1000hp+ Vortech Supercharged 240sx

Joon Maeng has one insane Chevrolet V8 build featuring a Vortech Supercharger to make his build a 1000hp+ monster. Odds are neither of us will ever drive a 1000hp Nissan 240sx so this video gives you a great POV of what it must feel like in a tin foil rocket ship around Irwindale Speedway.

2014 Formula Drift Championship [RESULTS]

ForsbergWallNJ-1230

All seven rounds of Formula Drift are in the books for 2014. Chris Forsberg ends up the 2014 champion but a margin of just 11 points which came down to the very last tandem battle of 2014. All Top 32 drivers are given a Pro license for next year while 33 and beyond are relegated into Pro 2. Here is how they finished:

We take a detailed look at the variety of Chevrolet V8 engines in the Formula Drift series. The guys at SDparts.com really wanted us to highlight the variety of setups in the series so we walked around the paddock and did some quick interviews. In this segment of Chevy V8 engines we check out Danny George and his LS3 powered Mazda Miata. Then pay a visit to Joon Maeng with his Vortech Supercharged LS7 engine. To finish off the episode we grabbed Matt Field with this unique LQ9 engine setup which is also running a Vortech Supercharger to make big power. Check them out!
