Last week Jhonnattan Castro got some seat time in his new ride for the season at Summit Point Raceway. This year he’ll be driving VK56 powered 370z producing 800hp (200hp less that Chris) built by Chris Forsberg Racing. The car is the same spec that Chris ran last year, but with a few more upgrades to keep up with the competition. Both drivers will run similar cars, and Hankook tires this season.

We’re looking to our fans to help with the 2013 design, download the template and design a livery. Once you design your entry post it to our wall. We will choose the winning livery March 1st. The winner will receive 2 tickets to a Formula Drift event of their choice, VIP behind the ropes access in the Achilles Radial pit, and a bag full of Achilles merchandise.

**Achilles logo’s must stay in place, any entry with logo’s moved will not be considered, winning design will be used as inspiration for 2013 livery. We will allow up to 2 designs per person**

Two additional notes: the Achilles logo may be changed to white and you may also design the livery in Forza.

Daigo Saito Buys Samuel Hubinette’s Dodge Challenger.

Daigo Saito has recently purchased the Dodge Challenger that was formerly driven by Sam Hubinette. This new addition to his V8 collection is being shipped straight from New Zealand (where Saml and Daigo competed in the Red Bull Drift Shifters event) to Japan to possibly compete in some form for the 2013 season. We have gotten a confirmation 100% he purchased the car but plans seem a tad unclear. This would be a great purchase for D1GP but seems quite overpowered for the tighter Formula Drift Asia courses. Daigo is rumored to also be building a new Dodge Viper for some drifting but no real informatin on on this project other than some passing rumors. We will keep you updated with the movements on these chassis but they sound pretty awesome.

Walker Wilkerson Goes LS7 for 2012 Formula Drift

Looks like we lost another SR to the V8 world. Over the off season Walker Wilkerson took note of the V8 dominance in Formula Drift. He completely rebuilt his chassis, tubing the front and rear, and also did a kouki front end swap. The new powerplant is a LS7 with a G-Force GSR 4-speed transmission putting out 500WHP and 500 FT/LBS of Torque. he’s also running a noticeable larger Falken Tire logo. Expect big things and more reverse entrys from him this year.

Patrick Mordaunt Teams Up with A’PEXi in 2012

PM Racing and driver Patrick Mordaunt are proud to announce their partnership with APEX Integration for the 2012 Formula Drift season (We called this move happening back on February 20th here). A’PEXi has always been a leader in high performance components for racers, driving enthusiasts, and has supported Patrick Mordaunt since the beginning of his career. “We are thrilled about this collaboration and opportunity to witness the potential of Patrick Mordaunt’s progression in his career,” said A’PEXi. Mordaunt will drive the recently upgraded A’PEXi Lexus SC430 that previously competed in the 2010 Formula Drift season. Mordaunt said, “I’m excited to partner with an experienced team like A’PEXi and am looking forward to driving their Lexus SC 430 for the 2012 Formula Drift season”.

In addition, to this exciting new partnership is the resurgence of Yokohama Tire back into the Formula Drift for 2012. The PM Racing / A’PEXi team has partnered with Yokohama Tire for the 2012 season and is excited to use high performance Yokohama tires with their proven track record for that elusive competitive edge.

Samuel Hübinette Retires Before the 2012 Formula Drift Season Starts

Sam Hubinette Racing along with Sam Hubinette have finally retired from Formula Drift just before the 2012 season. An insider told us that they had a serious lack of sponsorship interest in the program (which shouldn’t be shocking since the car failed to work at several events and he wound up MIA to run TORC at some other events). BFGoodrich pulled the plug on his program coming into 2012 and are no longer participating in Formula Drift. They do mention him coming to an event or two in 2012 but his focus and chance at a championship for this year are long out the window it sounds like. Enjoy the PR below.

”The 2-time Formula DRIFT champion, Samuel Hübinette has announced today that he will not be returning for the full 2012 Formula DRIFT pro championship season.

After 8 seasons with the Series, Hübinette will not be competing in the full Formula DRIFT schedule due to sponsors’ changing interest. Team Samuel Hübinette Racing will continue to participate in Formula DRIFT international demos and is still working on participating in some Pro Championship events. Hübinette will concentrate on other racing opportunities for 2012.

“Two of our main sponsors changed their marketing direction, so we decided that the best thing to do with the Dodge Challenger SHR drift car is to focus on doing demos. For competition, we’re pursuing opportunities in rallycross and off-road truck. We hope to run a round or two of the Formula DRIFT competitions for 2012, but won’t know for sure until things settle down,” said Samuel Hübinette, professional driver and team owner of SHR. “It has been such a good time to be part of the Formula DRIFT Series from day one and to be the inaugural Series champion means a lot to me. Drifting and Formula DRIFT has given me many opportunities in my career including stunt driving in movies and car commercials. “

In 2011, Hübinette drove in both Formula DRIFT and the Traxxas TORC Series ending up with a few conflicts that resulted in missing a couple rounds in Formula DRIFT. The highlight of the season was gaining a first qualifier spot in the Samuel Hübinette Racing Dodge Challenger at the — round. With 2 championships and 9 event victories, Hübinette maintains the record for most Formula DRIFT victories.

“We will miss having a competitor like Samuel this season,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “We know that when the funding and sponsorship re-align, Samuel will be able to return to the Series and continue to be a competitive driver.”
