The rulebook has even more changes for the new 2013 drift season. Here are a plethora of ways you can now throw away a race officially either in qualifying or tandem runs during the weekend. In theory these should make some judging calls much more black and white (hitting a cone for example) but potentially less entertaining to fans since we are forcing the drivers to be a hair more conservative and mild mannered. The big thing in the rules I noticed was ONE WHEEL OFF is now a huge step closer to a big fat ZERO. This would of changed up quite the results over the course of 2012 and produces some big headaches for Road Atlanta and PBIR. Below is the official rulebook change from FD.
4. Specific issues identified as zeros (0) in qualifying and tandem.
Formula DRIFT has identified specific terms that would receive a judging zero (0) in both qualifying and tandem.Qualifying:
- Spinning out
- Loss of drift
- Two tires off course
- Hood, hatch and/or doors open during a run
- Resulting contact causes an abrupt change in the vehicles drift and/or causes a spinTandem:
Two or more of the following items constitute and automatic zero in tandem:
- One wheel off course
- Straightening
- Hitting a cone or course marker
- Double entry
- Abrupt stop
- Stalling
Keep Drifting Boring
I don’t agree with the cone or marker being a zero. A deduction is what it should be. Also, what is double entry?
Reading comprehension is your friend.
Two or more of the following items constitute and automatic zero in tandem:
– One wheel off course
– Straightening
– Hitting a cone or course marker
– Double entry
– Abrupt stop
– Stalling
So one wheel off isn’t a zero by itself.
Double entry is when the lead car initiates and then corrects and re-initiates on the entry turn. This is included to prevent the lead car from causing the chase car to make corrections after committing to the leads car initial entry. They want a close tandem competition and the entry turn can make or break a run, and as a result are trying to be proactive to any antics that could be used.
And “I noticed was ONE WHEEL OFF is now a big fat ZERO” isn’t entirely correct. One wheel off is only a zero if done more than once or done in combination with one of the other items listed. (i.e. Two or more of the following items constitute and automatic zero in tandem:)

Posting as Mike Peters on Wrecked Magazine?
ZERO
Being Mike Peters in real life?
ZERO
Yea sorry Brian. I left out some keywords in the middle of that sentence
Hmm….I thought this was a rule already. Two or more wheels off was an auto zero right? I really hope this is not another rule overlooked in order to award keeping bananas. I
t is nice to see these updates in the rules becoming more public.
There should be bonus points for tapping cones that wobble but don’t fall over. I think possibly deducting marks when hitting cones is bad, because it means people will take boring middle of the road lines, not trying to go for walls/clipping points. It’s effectively reducing the excitement. I know ploughing through a line of cones is not good, and does not reflect well on the precision skills of the driver, but I think this will have a negative impact.
Addressing the Double Entries was a good idea. Not hitting cones and markers is no big deal. These guys are pros, they have the ability to control the car enough to not make contact.
I just hope it’s all called fairly for all drivers.
No problem, I know how that goes all too well
can’t drop 1 tire!? when did dirt dropping become uncool?
Poor Daigo Saito.
I think every single follow run he made in 2012 is now a 0 in 2013.
Never became uncool lumberjack, it’s just not all courses have dirt to drop on.
Technically you could still drop one as long as you didn’t make any other mistakes…
@ SamuriSam LMAO
if hatches can’t open then Tony Angelo will always lose….lol
@SamuriaSam
hahaha soooo true. we`d have a different champion that`s for sure. hopefully the judges will remember to take these rule changes into considration for this season
