2013 Formula Drift with Otto Graven Update- Scion FRS and 1000hp+

Just before Irwindale we made a 2013 Otto Graven returning post and quickly since then details about his program and links to his new team Facebook page have been sent to us through our contact form. The program from Otto Graven involves a Scion FRS and a partnership at some level with World Racing (Chris Rado) for 2013. The World Racing team is taking the knowledge they have of making big power with Toyota engines and plugging that into a Tundra 6.2L that has been rumored to be running wel over 1,000hp. The horsepower wars seem to be officially here thanks to our weight/tire rulebook in place. What does everyone think of this upcoming build?

  1. Umai Kakudo says:

Forget 1000hp. Who will be in the first to the 1000 lb-ft club? @Formula Powerslide

  2. tycooley says:

Umai, I think that is achievable with this build.

  3. Kamikaze says:

If Otto Graven wins best looking car next season, then we REALLY know he’s paying Formula D off!

  4. Swept says:

Just my opinion, but I feel like this horsepower war is ruining the point of drifting, and making Formula D that much more unappealing to rookies. There needs to be more methods of achieving parity between cars – not necessarily to a level of NASCAR or anything, but just so it doesn’t become a battle of who has more power.

  5. I am sure Daigo’s car makes 1000ftlbs at the crank with the squeeze.

  6. Dang says:

Is it just me or does that render look a lot like the GT300 BRZ?

  7. Kids Heart says:

They should go rocket bunny because that kit is ugly

  8. YOitzJDM says:

When SEMA rolls around, Rocket Bunny will be so played out people will be anxious to see anything non-RB

  9. Mike Peters says:

That’s a whole lotto horsepower. They will be gravenly mistaken to think any of that power otto get to the ground.

  10. Brian says:

Kudos for Otto keeping the power plant in the manufacturing family… This Otto be interesting

  11. Kevin says:

Mike Peters, that was fucking awful.

  12. roadsterjosh says:

It is a photoshopped picture of the gt300 brz. The horsepower war is going to continue, as it allow for way more tire smoke than ever before. Truthfully having that much power really covers up errors by the driver, making it easier to maintain drift while screwing up all the time. It also makes gaining banana easier if you sandbag like Daigo did all year. Realistically watching the lower powered cars is more fun, and always has been. Though having half a ton of horsepower is always cool, no matter if its your dads chevelle or a silly drift car that fanboys want to emulate.

  13. SteveO says:

High HP cars are always going to rule FD, just because it’s the top tier league of drifting- so if you can’t handle the heat get out of the kitchen and go to XDC or something like that.

  14. Kids Heart says:

    How do you sandbag banana?

  15. Frank says:

Not many people seemed to notice (or care) about Tony B’s 1,000bhp Mustang; though he didn’t seem to have performed very well in that car this year.

I hope he’ll be able to sort things out.

  16. Steffan says:

    I want one too.

  17. Rico Suave says:

I wonder how realiable it will be…

  18. roadsterjosh says:

    @kids heart
You can’t sandbag the banana, but you can certainly sandbag practice and qualifying. If you watch the way that any of the former D1 guys have driven if FD you’ll see it. Not that I am complaining, and unlike most people I wasn’t upset to see Daigo win. I think this year has had more entertaining battles than any other in FD history. It has also proven that you can’t come to the table under prepared anymore. Just watch how much more impressively the rookies are driving now compared to any other year, it’s awesome to watch these guys go all out on every run.
I am happy that things are progressing, thankfully it hasn’t taken forever to trickle down into the pro-am ranks; there will be some really good new rookies coming in next season.

  19. Scaifey86 says:

i forgot how big the new 86 engine bay is, that engine looks tiny, which i do doubt it actually is

  20. Mike Peters says:

Nobody likes sandy bananas. They otto ban those.
