Is This a New Tire Manufacturer Entering Formula Drift? [RUMOR MILL]

Posted on Jun 6, 2012 In Grassroots Rumors/Gossip

We stumbled upon this photo of Tyler Wolfson’s FD RX-7, currently one of the points leaders after landing on the podium at the most recent round of Top Drift, a Formula Drift Pro-Am Feeder Series. What we noticed was that Tyler appears to have picked up a title sponsor in the form of GT Radial.

GT Radial is already in competition use over in the Formula Drift Asia series and we wonder if this could be a sign of the Chinese manufacturer making it’s way across the pond to chase the success that Achilles is having it’s first year in US Formula Drift competition.

This guy is a smooth driver…. just wanted to say that.

  2. Lerjulz says:

wolfchild slide-factory, best dang skid racer there is…

  3. YOitzJDM says:

Is this Jt Wharerau’s old car??

  4. TireLess says:

GT Radial and Achilles are from the same country, not China.

  5. L.P. says:

They sponsor some good drivers in Europe….here’s one

  6. @TireLess – which country? my apologies if i made an error, I based that wording off of GT Radial’s parent company’s website in which they advertise that they are one of China’s leading tire manufacturers.

  7. Slider S15 says:

I doubt that they will capture the success of Achilles unless they bring the talent that Achilles have.

It’s hard to think Saito would be any worse on Falken’s, Hankook’s, Yokohama’s or Maxxis Tires…

Great to see new companies coming in though, especially if they can bring some top machinery/talent with them.

  8. Blaze1 says:

….where are they made…I know the company is Indonesian but that does not mean anything.

    Taiwan, The Philippines?

  9. WRONG says:

TireLess you are terribly wrong, GT radial is a chinese tire company, achilles is an Indonesian tire company.

  10. Blaze1 says:

GT Radial is owned 56% PT Gajah Tunggal (Indonesian Company) and 44% by Giti (Chinese company).

  11. TireLess says:

    PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk
Head office : Wisma Hayam Wuruk 10th Fl
Jl. Hayam Wuruk 8, Jakarta 10120, Indonesia
    Telp : 021-3459302, 021-3459431
    Fax : 0062-021-3804908

  12. TireLess says:

    @ WRONG

You must not work for GT Radial.

  13. Dr. says:

Now all Tyler needs is a reliable motor. Get that v8 already!

  14. Dang says:

It would be awesome for you to elaborate. Upon researching GITI it brings you to a site that lists them as GITI TIRE (CHINA) INVESTMENT COMPANY LTD. PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk indeed shows GT Radial as one of the product lines. So is the parent company Indonesian with tires made in China? (from from the few products I’ve seen).

  15. Steffan says:

GITI (china) is privately owned by the Liem family. Head of the family (until his death), Sudono Salim, also known by his Indonesian name Liem Sioe Liong, was Chinese Indonesian. GITI is a 49.7% shareholder of PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk through it’s subsidiary, Denham Pte Ltd while Compagnie Financiere Michelin holds a 10% interest. Ms Michelle Liem Mei Fung is the daughter (whom owns/controls Philando Pte Ltd which is a subsidiary of Habitat Properties which Micelle Liem has 99% ownership/interest and is the non-executive director of Tuan Sing Holdings to name a few) of tycoon Sjamsul Nursalim. Michelle also owns 50% of Niru Holdings Pte Ltd. The Nursalim family owns the remaining stock percentage of Gajah Tunggal. Michelle is a Liem but is the daughter of Sjamsul Nursalim. These two families collectively own and control more land and resources than just about anybody out there.

Tire manufacturing/sales is a massively profitable arena. Did you know before and during the Vietnam war Michelin tire was paying both sides of the war to keep their plantations from harm? Just pointing out they had enough money back then to pay off both sides in order to keep their investment safe during very bloody war.

  16. Jager says:

Want to make a splash GT Radial? Why not go for a proven driver with an FD license in a proven car. Wolfson aint bad, but jeeeeezuss man there are tons of proven drivers that cant afford to race. Rusakoff comes to mind… Wolfson doesnt have the flair or skill yet.
