The Questionable Drifting Ban in Atlanta Hits Channel 2 WSB News Cycle

Posted on May 9, 2012 In Formula D Grassroots Major Announcements

The local news channel WSB TV (Channel 2) which is the local ABC affiliate has been reporting on the drifting ban in Atlanta. One person on the news even mentioned that is was kind of like letting people play soccer but not football. WSB TV brought out a DB meter that never registered above 76db from the video we saw. The fireworks on Friday night at the local baseball stadium register 145-150db over double when they are shot off from the exact same area that go off mind you late into the night on this week night.

The WSB broadcasters even brought up that Cindy McCain (wife of R Senator John McCain) has drifted and openly supports the sport as something she does with her son. In case you missed it the city is passing a new sound DB ordinance and in addition they  specifically ban drifting within 1000 feet (almost a 1/4 mile) of residential zoning which is basically a death sentence for drifting in the city.  They will have a re-air about this in the 5:00pm EST / 2:00pm PST news cycle which you can catch live online. The Facebook group is also rapidly growing and already broke 7,000 members which you can follow the link below.

Missed the re-air, but it looks like they used Sapp’s BMW to do the test with. This is awesome since his car is usually one of the louder, if not loudest, cars at the events. Hopefully this ridiculous piece of legislature is thrown out or at the very least, ratified to include “hours of operation” which allow the events to continue.

The goverment is probably doing everything they can to get this under control before it turns into a media circus. This news piece may have been the push needed to get the ball rolling.

This has drawn alot of response from the drift community, but not as much is i would expect. If they are able to pass a ban like that in atlanta targeting just our sport, what makes people think it wont happen in their area next if theres a old couple some where close to a track or a parking lot event that just has nothing better to do. When people in other areas discover of this they may try to pull the same shit.

  7. Josh P says:

We have gotten more support than you’ll realize. We are hosting what may be our last event at Turner this coming weekend, the day after FD ends here in Atlanta. Many of the top drivers have said they will be coming to show support, and drive in what may be the very last organized drift event within the city. The community has invited Kaseem Reed, the mayor of the city to attend the event, and there will probably be local news organizations there to see what this is all about. Even if this is the last event that goes on there we as a community will do our best to make the best out of a bad situation.

  8. I touched one of Andy Sapp’s high fives today.

It made more noise than a Grand Slam during a Brave’s game.

  9. No drifting please says:

The people doing the drifting I have noticed do not know how to drive and are red neck punks . The kids in north Cobb doing this drifting have caused people to die and the cops hate them and will pull over anyone that even looks like a drifter car. Go get a job punks because no one wants your crap around because you might just kill some innocent person because of your stupidity.
