Orido Shows Off his 2012 D1 Grand Prix Build – Toyota 86 with Lexus V8 [SNAPSHOT]

Posted on Feb 3, 2012 In D1GP International Japanese Major Announcements

Another Toyota 86 is heading to the 2012 D1 Grand Prix season according to the Speedhunters Facebook page. This one will be driven by Manabu Orido but no Subaru engine inside this one! The Toyota 86 chassis is taking a Lexus IS-F V8 engine and should officially be the first V8 swap in a Toyota 86/Scion FR-S platform. It is a shame that D1 will have three of these in competition while we only will see one in Formula Drift for 2012.

Where are the v8 haters at?

  2. Pat Goodin says:

    It’s a shame it’s not a Chevy motor! Hahaha

But foreal, it looks super rad!

  3. Kids Heart says:

At least it’s not another LS motor?

  4. Mike Peters says:

    Hell yeah!

  5. MannyNJ says:

At least it’s not an american V8

  6. lifer says:

M.Orido- “I shoved a V8 in my 86 BIG WOOP! Wanna fight about it?!”

    think about it.
We all were waiting for the day when someone would put a V8 in Toyota’s new car, and we all were 99% sure it was going to be someone in the USofA with an LS something.
Now Orido has put in a Japanese domestic V8 in his 86, and V8 haters are wondering if they should be upset about it. So you get these “at least its not an American V8″ type of comments. If Gushi’s car was LS powered there would be a troll poo flinging contest of epic proportions on here bout Gushi is blah blah LS this and blah blah V8 that.
V8 haters are weak and ignorant.
I honestly can’t wait to see when someone will step up and build an LS powerd FR-S. 10 to 1 it will be done this year. 20 to 1 its a former Falken driver.

i’ve never hated V8′s i just hate cross brand swaps. this i like a TON!

  8. blaze1 says:

This car is gonna be slow for D1 standards I predict.

  9. Kids Heart says:

I hate all cross chassis swaps

  10. Richard Cranium says:

ironically i hate message board d-bags who never shut up about how much they hate things happening in the sport lol

  11. lifer says:

True that Richard, but they won’t, and we do all have a right to an opinion. Most who are tired of it, just move on to a different drifting site and return later to check in. I will admit it is a little sad to see so many resist the delelopmental changing of drifting in the USofA. Its like what did you expect to happen? Granted it is VERY possible to replicate what we are used to seeing in Japan, but I understand that different cultures have different tastes so the majority with the deepest pockets will make the move to start their own series how they see fit. Why can’t we have both? I guess its just the nature of things in the Motorsports-drift business world thats still in its infancy. IMO running a west and east division with 6 rounds each then a super drift bowl of sorts for the final? Well I’m done and much respect to all those Pro, Proam, and just those crazy guys and girls (yes girls drift too) sliding anything for fun.

Why would anyone hate cross brand swaps? Is there any real reason to that? Or is it similar to fundies not allowing gay marriage just because “It’s wrong”

I think some of you people are so ass-backwards in your arguements you have no idea what the fuck you are talking about.

  13. Lord says:

    First V8 in D1 :D

  14. lifer says:

I agree lolbus. I never had an issue or felt like I was voilating some higher authority by installing an LS into an S14. I had a 350Z for drifting before and it was a bag of shit.(2006 had massive oil consumption)Still paying for it, and Too expensive to mod for more HP then I lost my job so I lost the 350Z too. FML. I got a better job now and getting back into this with a more realistic view of what I’m doing with a more realistic budget and timeline.
Bottom Line V8+(any S chassis)=more for your money in everything you want for drifting. In the end, it’s the driver people see when your drifting really well.

  15. I think when you see a driver+car combination like Pat Cyr, you see the driver. Not to say his car isn’t set up properly as he has done quite the tits job on it. But when I see the majority of pro level builds out there, I see guys driving like shit and using hp as a crutch to make up for mistakes that a lower hp driver doesn’t have the option to.

An observation, not hating. As long as there is drifting at all, I’m happy.

  16. lifer says:

Yeah I know there is no “perfect” drift car/engine combo that works for everyone, but Cyr was innovative in his drive to build that 86. I have seen him drive in person, and I have to say I really think its one of the fastest sideways 86′s out there. When I say “you see the driver” I mean something I noticed myself and others do when there is an outstanding drifer on track. You look closer into the car at the driver inside. However the car looks, you are seeing the driver perform and if his car looked crappy in any way, it will look awesome once you see who is driving. I don’t know how to describe it better right now, but I hope you got the idea.
