Dai Yoshihara Spins and Yoshioka Crashes Into Him [VIDEO]

Dai Yoshihara Spins and Crashes with Toshiki Yoshioka

Watch as Dai Yoshihara attacks the Evergreen Speedway course and on the last clipping point over rotates into a spin parking him on the track. Yoshioka in the Retaks S13 was in hot pursuit and connected his door against the Rocketbunny front end of Dai Yoshihara’ S13. Both cars ended up being okay and finished the Formula D weekend.

KW Suspension Presents – Battle in Seattle [VIDEO]

KW TV Episode 5: Battle in Seattle

So it’s not quite the Battle in Seattle with Charlize Theron released a few years ago it was quite the weekend. KW Suspension drivers Dai Yoshihara and Fredric Aasbo both found a podium finish on the most unpredictable track of the season. Dai was able to take the championship points lead back from JTP and have some time after to conduct an interview with KW partner Fredric Aasbo for the camera.

Tyler McQuarrie Blogs About Battle with Fredric Aasbo

Tyler McQuarrie declined our interview on the subject against Fredric Aasbo (apparently we asked some serious questions) but he did take to his blog where he wrote some more light hearted comments about the issue. The tandem runs have been a talking point all week on the website (Tyler McQuarrie Vs. Fredric Aasbo – Was the Right Call Made?) in this thread. If you haven’t seen the runs yet we have posted two different POV angles of it from the weekend. Here is a driver perspective of what went down from inside the Nissan 350z.

Time to turn it up! I would battle Fredrick Aasbo in the great 8. He is an awesome driver and I knew he was going to do the same. On our first run, I had a good lead run and had a good gap to him through the bank. he closed up a bit in the power ally but carried a little too much speed in and washed out on the left hander. I ended the course with a 3-4 car gap on Aasbo.

On my follow run, I was on him from the middle to the end of the bank. I let him pull away a bit in the power ally so I could set him up better for the left hander. It worked perfect and I was on his door the rest of the coarse. I knew I had a clean run and I never felt him on my door so I knew that I was closer to him than he was to me.

When the judges called for a OMT I asked the ASD guys over the radio where he got me and they said ” don’t know”. All I could do is turn it up and win this round, and that I did. I got even closer to him this time but it was the same result, another OMT. My plan for the next run was to hold nothing back… drive through him if I had to. I had a good lead run with a decent gap on Aasbo. I was all over him on my follow but made a little bobble in the power ally. We finished the coarse side by side with inches between us.

I knew I did everything I could but they went with Aasbo… I didn’t know what to think at the time, I knew I was all over him, and when I led I pulled out a gap consistently. In years past it would be a no brainer win to me, Proximity has always been the most important variable in tandem. That makes the best show for the crowd and keeps it exciting. Now, style seems to trump proximity and I don’t think thats is going to produce the best tandem battles. It is what it is, and I lost but I’m still not very clear as to why.

Justin Shreeve gets Behind the Wheel of the Team Yellow JZX100 [VIDEO]

As a photographer and videographer, it’s not often that I get to be on the other side of my lens. Many other media guys will usually combat this by taking photos of each other on the sidelines, or as Tandem of Die has recently done, video of behind the scenes tomfoolery.

Tandem of Die video guy Justin Shreeve took things a step further at Gatebil as he hopped behind the wheel of the  Team  Yellow JZX100  MKII and took it out for a spin. Him and Joe Ayala put this video together showing off Justin’s runs and from the looks of things, it looks like he has pretty decent control of the 500+ horsepower Chaser. Justin described the experience:

After hearing how I felt about the car, it will be no surprise to you that I nearly cried tears of joy when Dag offered to let me drive it the very next day. When he first asked me, I instinctively and enthusiastically replied, “Yeah!” However, during the following car ride over to another shop, I had to get to the bottom of it. I nervously asked, “I wasn’t sure if you were joking before and it’s driving me crazy not knowing, so – Were you serious when you offered to let me drive your car tomorrow?” Dag quickly replied, “Of course!” and went on to explain to me how reliable and capable the car is. With a 1JZ producing 520hp and 620nm (456ft/lbs) of torque, a caged and spot welded chassis, full Ikeya Formula footwork, and a 4.3:1 final gear ratio, this MarkII is a step above the rest. “It’s a bit lazy below five thousand RPMs, then it explodes. It really explodes!”

It’s pretty safe to assume that I speak for everyone else when I say: I’m jealous.

Chris Forsberg Blogs About His Podium Run

Chris Forsberg stepped on the podium for the first time at Round 5 even though he is third in the championship race. His consistent approach to the sport has him not far off from a championship run. He wrote a blog post about his battles with Otto Graven, Dennis Mertzanis, Ryan Tuerck, Rhys Millen, and then his loss to Daijiro Yoshihara. I took an except from his blog post explaining what happened to his Nissan 370z in the final round. It’s quite a shocking event to happen in the finals of a Formula Drift event and we bet Chris will be relocating that ignition button in the future!

he finals, I was lined up with Daijiro Yoshihara, he was obviously having a great day but I knew we could beat him. I also knew that I could chase Dai harder than anyone else so I stood on the gas and stayed locked in with his car all the way through the bank while beating him with more angle at the same time! Before I explain what happened next, you should know that we run a sequential transmission which means you pull the shifter back to up-shift and push it forward to down-shift. So, as we transfer into the infield, I grab the e-brake and immediately go to down-shift into 2nd gear. As I punched the shifter forward, my hand slipped over the top of it and flew right into the ignition switch! I couldn’t believe it… I just shut the car off in the middle of our run. That had never happened to me before and it just happened to me in the finals!!! I went back out and put down the best lead run I could muster but it wasn’t enough.

So in the end, it was a little heartbreaking but it was still an awesome weekend!!! We went home with our best finish of the season and moved into 3rd place! Team Hankook also had their best finish, placing 2nd, 3rd and 4th, so close to sweeping the podium! Las Vegas is coming up next and the guys already have some great ideas for the car! I’m dreading the heat but I can’t wait to get back out there and compete!

Tyler McQuarrie Vs. Fredric Aasbo – Was the Right Call Made?

These two guys put on a clinic last weekend at Formula Drift and brought their respective tandem battle to a 2 xOMT at Evergreen Speedway. Per the Formula Drift rulebook the OMT call by the judges is only allowed to be used twice and then a winner must be declared. I really think Tyler had the win after the first OMT battle but the judges didn’t agree.

Here is a summary of the commentary from the three judges after the first two tandem battles:
Tony Angelo – OMT
Andy Yen – OMT
Ryan L. – OMT

All three judges went OMT for both the first battle and the second battle which threw them into a third tandem run. No commentary was given to the fans after the first OMT call but after the second OMT we got some audio from Tony Angelo and Ryan L:

“To hard to call.” – Tony Angelo
“Tyler’s lead run he hit the wall and straightened out a bit and when Aasbo made a mistake as well he put a wheel off. So they both made a mistake and I really couldn’t pick a winner out of the two.” – Ryan L.

After this second OMT all three judges picked Fredric Aasbo to take home the win. In case you haven’t seen the runs we compiled them below if you follow the bump. Tell us what you think!
