Calvin Wan Vs. Chris Forsberg – The Rulebook Vs. Reality [PART 1]
Posted by Wrecked Magazine on 22 Aug 2009 at 01:03 am | Tagged as: Calvin Wan, Chris Forsberg, Formula D

For those of you not at Formula D this weekend, the most controversy in some time revolved around the Calvin Wan Vs. Chris Forsberg tandem battle in the top 32. So much happened that I am going to break it down into PART posts. We have video of the runs we can post tonight and several rulebook violations along with other information.
To recap the events basically Chris Forsberg lead a tandem battle and Calvin Wan put the rear of his door straight into Chris Forsberg’s passneger side wheel which is visible above. Chris Forsberg called “5 minutes” and was issued the time. All the fans were told by Jarod DeAnda (at event MC) that he either had to run again to complete the tandem battle round or lose to Calvin Wan. Chris Forsberg Racing later confirmed they were told the same thing.
So Kevin Wells and his pit crew hustled and put a ratchet strap on his car to replace the bent tie rod. In my opinion they should of never let the car on the track in the first place but that is a whole new post in itself. The judges after another run call for a One More Time since Chris Forsberg spun at the finish line.
Then Chris Forsberg Racing calls for another “5 minutes” and were denied. This was made public to all the fans that he was unable to call 5 more minutes because your only allowed one per round. Not only is that totally bogus it’s not anywhere in the rulebook. Ryan Tuerck used his 5 minutes in Las Vegas twice and nobody said anything to him. The rule/call inconsistency from Formula D on this seems to be insulting of intelligence.
I combed the rulebook tonight and the word “minute” only appears 12 times in total. The only reference related to the 5 more minute rule is in APPENDIX E.
5-Minute Time Out
To maintain safety in the competition, during tandem competition runs only, teams may call for a 5-minute grace period to make any necessary repairs. 5-Minute Time Outs are not allowed forPractice or Qualifying. 5-Minute Time Outs are not to be used for strategic purposes. Only the
designated Team Representative will be allowed to request the 5-Minute Time Out, and it must
be made through a FORMULA DRIFT OFFICIAL. Only the CHIEF STEWARD may grant a 5-
Minute Time Out. Team will not be granted a 5-Minute Time Out if it is believed to be
unwarranted.
This mistake/error has huge championship complications. Especially since Ryan Tuerck (2nd place) lost to Sam Hubinette today in the top 32 and Tyler McQuarrie (DNF’d) by having a faulty cam angle sensor. We have more on the story which will be coming soon but not allowing a 5 minute break is just purely insane!

dramaaaaaaaaa
Let’s see what FD says about this. Tho Jarod is a “voice” he is not an official, just cuz he says it doesnt mean it is law, right?
Who’s tire sponsor has more $ isn’t that what it all comes down to , whoever gives FD more $ wins ?
DA should “rule” East Coast.
Truth Hurts. Suck It Up.
Haha FD is a joke imho they need to quit changing things around, make a solid rulebook instead of changing that every year and quit being fags.
gdamn it FD. dont turn into D1 on us.
Well realizing this is only part one of what looks to be an epic story it seems that the only error so far is the REASON given to the public as to why a second 5 minutes was not given.
J-Rod told everyone that it was because you aren’t allowed two in one round. However at the end of the rule that you cited it says that 5 minutes will not be granted if the steward feels it is unwarranted.
So perhaps that’s just what happend the steward felt that it was unessasary to grant them another 5 minute time out. That steward probably didn’t realize that Forsberg’s team pulled a very very temporary quick fix.
Since he was able to complete a full run with just a rachet strap the steward probably thought the car was good enough to run and another 5 minute rule was unnessasary. Who knows?! Looking forward to part 2 of this story
[...] 1- Chris was not given a 5 minute repair time due to a false rulebook citation that the officials claimed. This was already established in my last post – Reality Vs. the Rulebook [...]
Maybe I should join Drift Alliance
Technically there should not be a re run.
He wouldn’t have been able to fix the car in the 5 minutes granted and Calvin would have won.
Now Chris has a clean battle with the car now fixed.
I understand his point of view but now its unfair because you cannot simulate the same battle unless the car stays broken.
fuck formula d, this is so much bullshit.
Fuck you Wrecked how come you never report the controversy
in Seattle Tony B vs Eric O’Sullivan that was a two part violation too but it didn’t make front page. Even Stevie Wonder saw that one – but you only write about the Fat Cats/your buddies
1st violation he over took Tony B when Tony B was leading the chase on second run O’sullivan spun out – and he advanced. There’s video too when you spin its an instant zero!!
How about some fair reporting and stop sucking corporate dick!
All the east coast guys hang on to DA’s balls.
It looks unsafe to me…but someone must of handed FD some cash.
1.) Forsberg should have taken the win as Eric did in Washington. He would have time to fix the car for top 16, lucky him. That should have no effect on the decision.
2.) Formula D needs to fire their “chief steward” Now is their chance! He has been the source of nearly all FD’s drama and problems since he came on board. The only thing he does consistently is bring drama with his decisions. He brings nothing positive to FD or drifting but does alot to damage FD/drifting’s credibility.
3.) As has already been stated, Forsberg’s vehicle should have been inspected and NEVER allowed on track. (this is yet another failure of FD’s chief steward) The fact that he made 3 runs with a vehicle that should have been not only deemed illegal as per the rulebook, it was downright unsafe! While letting him on track in that condition is FD’s failure, FORSBERG SHOULD BE FINED FOR COMPETING WITH THE VEHICLE IN THAT CONDITION!!! They should have taken the win/loss or whatever they were dealt and then protest it from there. That’s how EVERYONE ELSE does it. Instead, they went about it in a way that put the themselves, fans, media, and their opponent at risk. That is simply not acceptable and is an issue that needs to be addressed.

A- Was a protest filed that we can report on?
B- I remember the runs as I was in Seattle. Both drivers did very poorly in the series of tandem runs.
C- Why don’t you post a link to the video so we can have a poll or start a topic about it?
D- We just recently covered Tony B.’s team video he released. Maybe you should just come to the site more
