Hold the Phone: Tanner Foust’s Scion tC Might Still Face Legal Issues

The buzz around the pits Saturday night after the event is going to get some people really fired up we think. Judging that the other post about this topic “Tanner Foust’s Scion tC Protested at Formula D Seattle” has turned into a storm on our site we can imagine this one will get people going just as much.
After the event was over and people were packing up for home the rumor around the pits was that Tanner Foust’s Scion was said to be out of the clear but Formula D is still in an ongoing investigation with the car and it appears he will be docked points/fined (some sort of punishment for rule violation) regardless of Randy’s statement to us that the car is a closed case.
While the Toyota Supra MKIV sub frame is a blatant rule violation it is unclear how they received permission to do this in the off season or if they did receive proper permission at all. The car has gone through tech at some points this year and we aren’t really sure why the car was not flagged or stopped then but it looks like we will just have to sit around and see what happens.
Any docking of points will not affect Tanner Foust’s inability to win a third championship this year since he is already to far back in the points to make a realistic run for the championship in 2009. The other word around the pits is that most teams with the exception of fellow Scion and Hankook drivers are supporting the petition againt Tanner Foust and his Scion tC. We will keep an eye to see if anything breaks in this story before Sonoma in ten days.

I haven’t really followed much about why his car is being protested? From what I understood everything was good about it. I also second Will’s post, if there was problems with it, why wait until now?

and its about time the toyota boys had to play by the same rules as everyone else. Dollars can flex rules for a while but sooner or later you will have to pay the piper.
this is what happens when big dollars come into play instead of what is traditional. FD allows these huge money tossing teams to make the series exciting with their erector set cars etc. as teams they want to build the most radical thing out there that they feel will be competitive. it isnt wrong for them to be ambitious, but what is wrong is when they are to present the car infront of a tech staff… they let things slide. may it be due to who the driver/team is, or for some other reason… this is what destroys drifting. didnt the autobacs car get a shit load of opposition last year for running gt-r suspension setups when it was originally a gt-s or something of the sort? (which is all this scion garbage is) tanner as a driver…. i am all for him as a fan, but as a fan looking at the car, i hate it. i hate what drifting has become on all fronts nowadays… people whinning about D1, people whinning about FD… fuck it. everyone just take it back to the streets if you dont like what the hell is going on. stick with grassroots if its that big of a problem. using tony angelo as a skape goat etc, who cares who he is a part of or his affiliations. its pretty hard to be a fair judge imo, and from what i seen no one has a pettition against him as a judge…. just a abomination of a car. want drifting to change?? equalize the tech standard, and make sure all teams are treated fair. go hard on the privateer that has no fans, and go hard on the large sponsored team that has all the fans. set examples. make teams honest in their builds by being honest and competent in your inspection and judgement of the vehicle.

I heard that there was a midseason tech day, and since the 08 rulebook allows “approved unibody/firewall rules” and the 09 rulebook allows same manufacturer subframe swaps, but you have to use one of the rulebooks, this car was found to be illegal, where it had been previously overlooked.
