D1GP USA Lays Down the Law – Team Orange Fined $17,500

Wow, after reading the official D1GP USA statement about the D1GP Chicago event it makes Team Orange look even more out of hand. Apparently according to the PR sent out by Rich Goodwin Tanaka even injured a course worker in the process of “hissy fit.” Here is the quote from the release,
One of our pit workers was standing in front of Tanaka’s car with his arm out and hand up signaling to him to not move forward trying to get Tanaka to turn around and go back to his pit position. It was about this time Tanaka was informed of the Wang victory. Believing that the original call the run earlier was for a OMT, Tanaka and Team Orange then went berserk. Tanaka then pressed his car against the course workers leg and proceeded to continually rev his engine. Team Orange’s mechanic then slapped the course workers arm (he had up signaling Tanaka to not move forward) in an attempt to get him to put his arm down. This slap of the course workers arm was repeated no less than 3 times before the race starter told his course worker to get out of the way. At this time Tanaka hit the gas and performed a wheel spin (burnout) thus spinning the car around in obvious defiance over the decision by the judges and his team’s misunderstanding. As he did this he reached out of the car and gave everyone and obscene gesture, but as he was doing this he also clipped our race starter’s knee with his rear bumper and ran over his foot. An injury that required the EMT’s to assist our starter with his injuries.
We removed quite a bit of information between here in the end of the statement but you can read it all via a .pdf at the end of the post. Below we skip to Rich Goodwin’s statement and ruling on the matter. It calls for a season suspension of Kazuhiro Tanaka, stripping of season points, and a $10,000 fine! Kumakubo is fined $5,000 and was stripped of his points that he earned up to the top four forfeit in Chicago only. The mechanic who slapped the course worker is fined $2,500 for his actions. This brings a fine total to $17,500 for Team Orange. Something tells me we won’t be seeing them in D1GP USA anytime soon. Here is the official D1GP USA statement on the fine structure/ruling.
D1GP USA’s mission in 2009 was to produce the most unbiased and fair competition possible. It is this mission that allows us to not see nationality, experience, celebrity or the difference between a heavily sponsored team or privateer, but rather to see every driver on the same level.
We understand that Team Orange is the most famous drift team in the world and its drivers regarded as some of the best drivers there are, however that does not give them the right to expect to be treated differently and does not give them the right to act the way they did at this event, therefore the following penalties are imposed.
The Penalties in this matter are as follows:
1) Kazuhiro Tanaka – Fine of $10,000 & loss of series points & suspension for the rest of the D1GP USA season.
2) Nobushige Kumakubo – Fine of $5,000 & loss of event points in Chicago
3) Team Orange – As a result of the team mechanic’s actions, an additional $2,500 fineThere has also many been many rumors surfacing regarding Ken Nomura’s conduct at the Chicago event. Thus far our investigation into the matter is not complete. We will continue to investigate and make a ruling later next week.

Simpily amazing. Wow. Welcome to america boys and girls.
The .pdf doesn’t work
Wow. Thats crazy!! Tanaka shouldve won that race but should not of acted like he did. D1 will def not be the same without them in nj. Sad days.
D1 in USA is offcially ruined.
when i watched old vids of D1 in E town/ irwindale it seemed like everyone was having a good time. now that its under new employment, so much drama is going on
having a us d1gp was a good idea but poorly executed. professional drifting is becoming a soap opera with d1s shananigans and formula d’s flunk out drivers turned judges. real drifting is still alive in the streets
Being angry and disappointed is one thing, but throwing a tantrum and having no class is another. I was a fan of Team Orange, but after this I have lost a lot of respect for them. I dont get what the Japanese drivers were thinking (Tanaka, Kumakubo, and Nomura.) Id be suprised if they came back. D1 is already a mess and with them gone its gone from bad to crap.
D1 is seriously in the shitter now. LOL. poor execution to poor conduct. No surprise if u ask me.
I understand and am fully aware that D1GP wherever it is needs the big name drivers and teams, whoever thay may be. However, a loss is a loss. We are all adults here, now act like it.
D1 needs to go back to it’s 2006 glory. The clock can’t be turned back. But it can changed for the future. Lets hope that D1 USA and D1 Japan realize this before it’s too late.
that suxx!
This will be the end of D1/Team orange stateside for sure, now give tanakas/kumakubo subaru to Eric in FD as his is bust
I think Tanaka has Downs Syndrome. I mean look at the guy. If not his actions in Chicago proves he is a fucking retard!
Also, even Nopi didn’t have this much drama.
I’m glad these people were disciplined!! There behavior was out of hand.
Team Orange is just going to pack up their toys and go home. It’s not like they’re ACTUALLY going to pay the fine! In fact, D1 probably promised Team Orange drivers 10k per car to transport to all of the events… so instead of giving Team Orange 20k, they give them $2.5k and that’s it.
[...] Orange Fined $17 ouin c’est le cas de le dire Tanaka : plus
After watching the video. TANAKA clearly won. I totally support Tanaka’s rage.
Kevin-
You support him throwing a tantrum like a little kid, injuring a course worker and flipping off the crowd…….. that clearly makes sense
How do you figure Tanaka clearly won?
This is lose/lose for everyone… D1 USA clearly cannot handle running a motor sports event let along a series, what do you expect from a bunch of ex-carshow guys. They simply bit off more than they can chew. As a result drifting fans new and old, competitors as well as sponsors are being left with a bad taste in their mouths about all of this. What was a nice attempt to grow the sport is turning into a big black eye for drifting. IMO
They have sponsors? Other than that company Genius Tools (how ironic) I haven’t seen anyone supporting them. But I mean that company also supports Rhys Millen so I guess what can you expect.
HAHAHAHA
I came back from an awesome trip from seattle, it’s 4am, just about to settle down and sleep, and I find this.
Just wow, I mean it was always obvious this series was going downhill but this just keeps getting better and better. No surprise crap like this happens when you have the guys behind hin organizing a lot of it.
D1USA is a joke series run by a bunch of money hungry people. They do not in the least bit care about Drifting’s success period! Go AWAY!!!!
its a shame they wrecked the D1 name , D1 Japan is still known greatly worldwide, but this single move has devalued there wholeD1 brand worldwide tenfold, id expect alot of D1 drivers looking for oversee’s drives after this
“I think Tanaka has Downs Syndrome. I mean look at the guy. If not his actions in Chicago proves he is a fucking retard!”
Reading this makes me laugh as myself and a couple friends saw tanaka in person for the first time in chi town and all thought the same thing
After all of this, D1 USA goes a rebadges themselves the “World DriftCar Championship”.. geez!!! Remember when they said in a press release that this was drift racing. D1 USA has combined the name of 2 defunct series Driftcar America and World Drift Series, neither made it to launch 1 event, to form… D1 USA: World Driftcar Championship… effing LAME!!! Go back to throwing car shows.
Someone…or collective drifting groups around the country should form another pro drift series, or a west coast and east coast series, & at the end of the season, have the two meet and crown a champion. This shit with D1 has been so hot and cold. I think they are getting upset because some privateers CAN compete at thier level and win. They can’t even get the dates on thier schedule right, moving dates…etc, not alone judge a competition. They are dead and bet they won’t be back next year.
Stop Crying!
